Bryan AcutoLast Saturday, the gentlemen of the Sigma Chi fraternity attended the second annual Clean City Day.
In an effort to keep Tampa cleaner than the way they found it, the 24 participants sacrificed a Saturday morning to be in Al Lopez Park for the event.
The affair kicked off the new Keep Tampa Clean Campaign.
“Even though it was only a scratch on the surface of cleaning the city,” Sigma Chi President Danny Davis said, “the difference we made was meaningful to everyone involved.”
The Sigma Chi brother’s excessive participation caused the Clean City volunteer in-charge of registration to open a line exclusively for the fraternity.
The President took initiative behind the check-in table to assist his brothers.
The process became too efficient and once all the Sigs had registered, Davis found himself working overtime to check-in other eager volunteers.
Before the day began, Mayor Pam Iorio delivered a commencement speech. Mayor Iorio reminded the crowd that Tampa is the nation’s 55th largest city, and eighth cleanest.
After the opening ceremony, she visited with the local organizations including Sigma Chi. Brothers Jon Howard and Mike Torti were allowed to thank the Mayor with a kiss on the cheek.
“It’s cool that the Mayor is so approachable,” said Howard.
From Himes to Hillsborough, down Hillsborough to Westshore and back the Sigma Chi fraternity did their part for four hours to service the Tampa community.
