Agatha Harkness Returns

By Sofia McGinnis

Marvel has released its newest series! Agatha All Along follows Agatha Harkness, played by Kathryn Hahn, after the events of the 2021 Marvel series WandaVision. With the help of some new friends, Agatha journeys down the infamous Witches Road, hoping to regain her lost power.

The new series premiered on Sept. 18, 2024, with plans to release weekly episodes with the finale set for Oct. 30. Currently, four episodes are released on Disney+, with nine episodes set to be released.

“I really like it!” said Fiona Taft, an international business and economics major at The University of Tampa, who watched the series with her roommates. “It feels well-paced like they won’t run out of material by the final episode, but they also won’t cram everything into the final episode.”

Tons of students are logging onto their families’ Disney+ accounts and watching the new series, and it’s no surprise. New faces such as Heartstopper actor Joe Locke join the cast as Teen, a goth boy eager to join Agatha on her journey down the Witches Road in hopes of obtaining his own power. This new character adds a bit of mystery to the series.

It is revealed in the third episode, “Through Many Miles of Tricks and Trials,” that someone has placed a sigil on the boy. The psychic Lilia Calderu, played by the lovely Patti LuPone, points out that Teen has been placed under a spell. She explains that because of the sigil, no witch will ever know the boy’s name or story.

This adds an air of mystery to the series for the audience as they wonder who the boy is.

“It’s thrilling not knowing what happens next in the show,” said Shia Sanders, a junior international business and entrepreneurship major, “And it keeps you on the edge of your seat.”

The sigil is not the only mystery in this series. Jennifer Kale, played by the incredible Sasheer Zamata, says that Agatha used to have a son. The witch explains that Agatha gave up her son in exchange for dark powers; however, many fans have started to speculate if it is true.

It looks like these two mysteries might be more connected than many audiences realize. Some fans have started to speculate that Teen is Agatha’s son and that she was the one to cast the sigil. That is not the only relationship audiences have been interested in.

Rio Vidal, played by Aubrey Plaza, seems to have a past with our main character, Agatha. Despite being a leader of the Salem Seven, an order tasked with hunting down Agatha, the two women seem to have a history together. It is also revealed in the third episode that they might have once been in a relationship together.

These combined mysteries about Agatha’s past have audience members coming back for more.

“I’m excited to find out the background behind the teen,” said Gabrielle Phillips, a sophomore allied health major. “And [I’m] curious about Agatha and Rio’s relationship.”

Marvel has had a lackluster couple of years. With many movies and series bombing, many fans have started to step away from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, with the success of Deadpool & Wolverine, Marvel has started to move in an upward trend.

Agatha All Along seems to be following Marvel’s new trend.

“I haven’t seen a lot of advertising for the show, and I’ve also been drifting away from Marvel,” said Taft. “However, the writing and effects in this show are great; I think this show lives up to the hype of classic Marvel.”

With only five more episodes to go and lots of mysteries to unfold, we will see how the series will end. It looks like it might be worth watching this Halloween season.
