“Deadpool & Wolverine” was released in theaters this summer on Friday, July 26; it’s considered an action-filled and entertaining Marvel movie. It made a total of $1.219 billion at the box office, and many viewers cannot get enough of it.
This is the third film in the Deadpool series, and with that comes great responsibility to try to make a successful trilogy. Throughout the film, Deadpool’s peaceful life becomes disturbed when the Time Variance Authority (TVA) wants him to keep the multiverse safe. With this, he unites with Wolverine to tackle this mission so he can save his world from these threats.
The film is exciting and filled with action, while also including many moments of comedic relief. Deadpool, played by Ryan Reynolds, remains unchanged, continuing to tell explicit jokes throughout the film, which contributes to its R rating. Make sure you don’t have any kids around when watching!
There are also several times in the film when Reynolds makes jokes at his own expense while also making explicit jokes about Hugh Jackman’s looks. Many references were unexpected like the “Gossip Girl” joke at the beginning of the film, where Reynolds makes a joke about his wife Blake Lively.
Because the film is on the vulgar side, it has received many positive reviews from viewers, who say it brought plenty of laughs and that some jokes came out of nowhere, making the movie overall more enjoyable.
“I have always loved Deadpool and how funny his character is. I thought the film was entertaining, and there was a lot happening which I liked, and it was overall just a fun movie. I would watch it again,” said senior marketing major Ashley Field.
There are also many digs at Disney, which is ironic considering that this film is produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. This irony made many people laugh, given the number of provocative jokes throughout the film, especially for something associated with Disney.
A recent graduate from the University of South Florida, Nicholas Havener, shared his thoughts on the movie as well. “I thought the jokes are what made the movie so good. Some of them caught me off guard, which made it funnier,” said Havener.
Although the film contains many jokes for comedic relief, it might not be for everyone. Some viewers may not want to sit through an entire movie filled with inappropriate jokes one after another. If you’re one of those people, this movie may not be for you.
Wolverine, played by Hugh Jackman, remains true to character while also contributing to the plot by helping Deadpool save his world. Both Reynolds and Jackman are incredibly fun to watch on the big screen, which makes the movie highly enjoyable for viewers.
The film does a good job with the multiverse narrative that the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is developing, fitting well with other films in the franchise.
“I’m not really a huge MCU fan in general, but I went to watch the movie with my friends, and I think it was really good. From the start, you can tell that it was going to be so funny,” said a recent graduate from Nova Southeastern University, Erika Foti.
Overall, if you are a huge MCU fan, you are likely to enjoy Deadpool & Wolverine; it is genuinely a fun film. If you also have a taste for dark humor, this movie will be right up your alley.
“Deadpool & Wolverine” has a runtime of two hours and seven minutes and is rated R.
