Last Friday five student bands competed in the Battle of the Bands competition for the grand prize of opening for Slightly Stoopid in the third annual concert in the park this spring.
After all was said and done 20/20 Boulevard was named the winner of this year’s event. Their final performance was easily the crowd favorite.
The event, which was sponsored by Student Productions, featured the bands performing from 15 to 20 minutes sets.
Although there can only be one winner, every band deserves recognition for the show they put on for the student body that night. Regardless of who was performing, students were singing and humming along throughout the show.
The hip-hop/rock trio Nz opened the night with a stripped down version of “Heartless,” by Kanye West before turning up the volume for the rest of the set and setting the bar for the entire night.
The second band to play was Shangri-La, which played a soothing, melodic 15 minute set of rock-influenced songs. Shangri-La managed to infuse heavily distorted guitar riffs with an arrangement of keys, bass lines and drum beats.
Lanyon Heinemann played an intimate acoustic set followed by the Chris Perry Band who brought the tempo right back up to speed.
But the true star of the night was surely 20/20 Boulevard. Immediately catching fans attention with their diverse mix of sounds, 20/20 Boulevard played out the rest of the night and ultimately ended up not only winning the crowd over, but the judges too.
