“We’re trying to even everything out,” Student Government President Andrew Madock said when asked about the revisions to Student Government’s Constitution.
SG is doing just that, with a barrage of changes and clarifications to its constitution, which has not been revised in several years.
One of the most notable revisions is the empowering of the Assembly through installing a new position on the Executive Board.
The Speaker of the Assembly, the tentative title for the position, will be an equal member of the Executive Board, but will also be “responsible for relaying information and issues from the General Assembly to the Executive Board,” according to the revised Constitution.
The position of Secretary will become the Vice President of Communications, and the Treasurer will be referred to as the Vice President of Finance.
The new constitution also clarifies the attendance policy for General Assembly meetings.
“We’re not out to get people,” Madock explained.
Another key change is the elimination of the Student Services representative, and the incorporation of those responsibilities into the duties of the SG Vice President.
Other changes include that each congress will be elected by its own class, and that independants will now account for half of a vote rather than the previous one-fourth vote. Independants are also now redefined as enrolled undergraduate students, as the previous definition was unclear.
