Photo from the 1981 MoroccanIt’s no secret that UT has an alcohol problem. From underage drinking to alcohol poisoning it is apparent that the university has had some setbacks with this issue in recent months. The Minaret has made headlines with this issue, and Dean of Students Bob Ruday has made legal steps to curb excessive drinking through legislation to stop drink specials. In response to this matter, Student Government President Andrew Madock has put together an event called Responsible Consumption Night.
“The aim of this event is to provide a safe on-campus atmosphere that students can drink responsibly, while still learning about what alcohol norms are on campus. Basically, how students compare to their peers,” said Madock.
Responsible Consumption Night will be held Nov. 16 from 9-12 p.m. at the Rathskeller, located in the bottom of Plant Hall.
Madock will be speaking about how to drink in comparison to weight, and what a “real” serving of wine, beer and spirits are compared to what is served at clubs and bars. Moreover, Madock has invited the Associate Dean Gina Firth, who is working closely with Dean of Students Bob Ruday regarding alcohol issues, to attend and help with answering questions at the event.
“I appreciate that students can approach me, whether it be at happy hour at McDintons, over a shot in Ybor or simply while I am furiously walking around campus. I feel that my well-rounded personality has made more students feel comfortable approaching me about student government issues.” Madock expressed these ideas in an informal interview before the Student Government General Assembly meeting.
Madock is looking to conquer the alcohol issues without preaching abstinence or punishment, but rather by showing students how to drink responsibly drinking on campus.
Madock will be following the SAO guidelines for events on campus with alcohol. Sodexho will be catering and providing a cash bar that includes beer and wine. Using a third party vendor is a requirement for students having events with alcohol on campus. Further, he will have a guest list before the event as well as extra security provided. Student TIPS trained volunteers will be present at the event as well to make sure no problems arise and to look out for the safety of their peers.
Between the efforts of Andrew Madock, Gina Firth and Bob Ruday, administration seems confident the alcohol problem will be greatly diminished by the end of the academic year.
“Some of the most powerful governments were brainstormed over drinks,” Madock stated.
“What is to say our campus issues cannot be solved with a pint?”
