How to Conquer Finals Week

By Liv Dennis

With finals week quickly rounding the corner, the whirlwind of deadlines, stress, and sleepless nights is consuming the minds of many college students. But it doesn’t have to be that way! Conquering finals week requires a combination of effective planning, self-care, and study strategies. Here are ten tips and tricks for a smooth end to your semester and to relieve the obstacles of one of the hardest weeks of the semester.

Study Tips

  1. Create a study schedule: Break down your study material into smaller sections and assign specific times and days to focus on each topic. Prioritize subjects or topics that need more attention, and set realistic goals to avoid cramming.
  2. Practice active learning: Engage with the material actively by summarizing notes, teaching concepts to others, or testing yourself with practice problems and flash cards. Active engagement enhances retention and understanding more than just looking over your notes.
  3. Ask for help: If you’re struggling with certain topics, reach out to your professors, classmates, or tutors for clarification. Collaborating with study groups can help to provide new perspectives and make studying more effective.
  4. Minimize distractions: A huge way to minimize distractions is to turn off unnecessary notifications on your devices, put them out of your reach, and power them off until you’re done with your work. This is the best way to limit distractions and allow yourself to make the most effective use of your time.
  5. Use different study formats: Mix up how you study! Studying doesn’t always need to be redundant. You can read notes, watch videos, listen to podcasts, and write summaries. Engaging multiple senses and learning styles can keep you from zoning out and reinforces understanding.

Wellness Tips

  1. Stick to a sleep schedule: During any week, and especially finals week, you should aim for seven to eight hours of sleep each night. Quality sleep can help improve your memory retention, focus, and overall performance — far more than pulling all-nighters and stressing.
  2. Take breaks: The amount of work or studying you have on your plate may feel overwhelming and like something that needs to be done all at once; however, try your best to incorporate short breaks during your study sessions to refresh your mind. During these breaks, consider light exercise or meditation to manage your stress levels.
  3. Fuel your body: Focus on making sure you’re fueling your body with balanced meals. During the chaos of finals week, do your best to keep healthy snacks on hand and drink plenty of water to stay energized and alert.
  4. Make time for friends and fun: Finals can seem all-consuming, but it’s still important to spend a little time each day doing something you enjoy, like listening to music, drawing, or catching up with your friends. Socializing and hobbies can help maintain a sense of balance and keep burnout at bay.
  5. Stay positive: Write down a few things you’re grateful for each day, even during finals. Positive thinking can help boost your resilience and help you maintain a healthy mindset that can reduce anxiety and help you have confidence in yourself.
