Every year in mid-September, the Emmys are hosted by three sister television organizations that work together to preserve its legacy: the Television Academy, the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, and the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
The father-son duo of Schitt’s Creek stars Dan Levy and Eugene Levy hosted the 76th Emmy Awards, broadcast live on ABC from Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater.
Hacks and Shōgun were voted the best in television at the 2024 Emmy Awards. Shōgun won Outstanding Drama Series, earning 18 awards across various categories. Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, respectively. FX’s The Bear received 23 nominations — the most ever for a comedy series — and won awards for best lead actor, supporting actor, and actress.
Other winners include Elizabeth Debicki for The Crown and Billy Crudup for The Morning Show. The show Hacks won Outstanding Comedy Series, with Jean Smart as Lead Actress. Baby Reindeer won for Lead Actor and Writing and Jessica Gunning won Supporting Actress. Jodie Foster won Outstanding Lead Actress for her role in True Detective: Night Country.
“I would say, some of the cast of some shows were really strong, which dominated categories, which helped them secure the win,” said Mia Shaw, a junior in film and media at The University of Tampa.
According to TV Insider, The Bear overtook the previous comedy record of 22 nominations for 30 Rock this year. Jeremy Allen White won Lead Actor in a Comedy, while Liza Colón-Zayas and Ebon Moss-Bachrach won for their supporting roles. “The Bear went into the show as the most-nominated comedy series in Emmys history … for its second season, and won three of the first four awards given out with comedy wins,” said Entertainment Weekly.
Shōgun received 25 nominations and won major awards, including best drama. The show won 18 Emmys for its first season, the most in Emmy history.
“I think the diversity was really strong this year. For example, there were Asian and Latinx actors who made some achievements, which I thought was very inspiring. With Shōgun making a sweep in the drama categories, I feel the Emmys will start recognizing more international projects since it will help them expand,” said Shaw.
“It is challenging to compete with streaming services now, but since the traditional networks are more towards high-budget productions, I think people will still want to lean towards them rather than wait until something appears in a streaming network,” said Shaw.
