TAMPA Fla. — It’s sealed. Paramount Skydance takes over Warner Bros. Discovery closed it with a $110 billion merger hoping to change the media landscape. Oct. 6 marks the official transition, merging two popular Hollywood studios, CBS and CNN. This will also include bringing together television networks and what we use today streaming platforms all under one company. This huge umbrella will fall under what is now known as Skydance, led by CEO David Ellison and former Mattel CEO serving now as co-CEO Ynon Kreiz, as we see the entertainment industry changing we see audiences competing across film, television and digital platforms.

This acquisition will gather a collective of companies of entertainment brands, such as Warner Bros. Studios, Paramount Pictures, HBO and CBS. The combined company will also include CNN, CBS Sports, TNT Sports, and HBO Max which is under Skydance as well. This foundation can reshape how films and television shows reach audiences, as well as how the company may have to compete with streaming services such as Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon Prime Video.

According to Investing, Ellison mentioned his company vision for Skydance.

“To build the next-generation media and entertainment company, powered by creativity and technology,” said Ellison.

According to the press release, the company plans to use its extensive film and television library to reach audiences in more than 200 countries and territories. With franchises like “Top Gun,” “Harry Potter” and “SpongeBob SquarePants,” Skydance aims to expand its entertainment offerings and release at least 30 movies in theaters each year.

“Today is a historic day, not just for Skydance but for our entire industry. From the start, our ambition was to bring these two storied studios together and create a stronger competitor, with the talent, resources, and reach to tell great stories in every genre, on every platform, for audiences everywhere. Now that ambition is a reality,” said Ellison.

Not confirmed yet, the merger is expected to make a change with how audiences access streaming platforms. According to Paramount+ merger FAQ, its streaming services will eventually combine under one umbrella. However, Paramount+ and HBO Max will continue operating on their own for now, with no immediate changes to subscriptions or pricing. An official statement regarding pricing or timeline structure has not been announced by the company’s integration plans.

Each movie will have a minimum 45-day theatrical run before being made accessible on paid video-on-demand, according to the press release, Skydance’s commitment to release at least 30 theatrical films every year. Additionally, the corporation intends to release over 180 television series and episodes within its portfolio. The scale of its combined library raises concerns about how it would balance known brands with unique stories from up-and-coming filmmakers, despite the company’s claim that the merger will provide chances for creative workers.

The corporation is under financial strain as a result of the acquisition, despite its intentions for expansion. According to Investing, the combined business is anticipated to have debt of over $80 billion, and Skydance has set a three-year goal of at least $6 billion in annualized cost savings. These financial objectives generate concerns about how the business will strike a balance between cutting expenses, funding new projects, and fostering creative talent.

Jacob Dobosh, a former Film and Media Arts student at the University of Tampa expressed his concerns about how the acquisition could affect filmmakers and how they plan to share their stories.

“I worry about the soul of a story being replaced by the bottom line,” said Dobosh. “I feel like this will only limit the creative voice more than it already is.”

His concerns raise questions about whether filmmakers have more opportunities or will it lessen their opportunities as they step in this field. Furthermore, will combining these companies make it harder for original stories to receive the support needed.

Dobosh also emphasized how this merger could lead to higher streaming prices.

“I also feel they will absolutely use this as an opportunity to continue to pin the streaming services against each other and claim ‘market competition’ and raise rates because now HBOs value has increased because of this deal,” said Dobosh.

Skydance’s ability to strike a balance between financial growth and creative freedom will be closely monitored as it expands its entertainment portfolio. Filmmakers and viewers will have to wait to see how those promises materialize in upcoming movies and TV series, despite the company’s claims that the acquisition will increase opportunities throughout the industry.
