It’s only been a few days into 2023 and some of our favorite female singer-songwriters are calling out their former lovers. But was the way these women handled it the correct way?
Shakira recently did not hold back with her collaboration with Argentinian DJ and producer Bizarap. Her new song “BZRP Music Sessions Vol. 53” contrasts with her other recent songs “Te felicito” and “Monotonia,” where she did not mention anything specific after she found out former Spanish soccer player Gerard Piqué was cheating on her with a woman almost twice as young as Shakira.
In the song, she did not leave any subtle hints by directly stating that he left his mom as her neighbor, and mentioning the $14 billion tax fraud situation they had a few months ago when she almost went to jail. In the music video, we even see her signaling the number two with both hands across each other as she sings “I’m worth two 22-year-olds,” the hand signals he would dedicate to her every time he scored a goal, signaling their shared birthday of Feb. 2.
The famous “She-Wolf” singer even mentions Pique and his new girlfriend Clara Chia in the original Spanish version of the song as well as saying that he changed “a Ferrari for a Twingo” and a “Rolex for a Casio.”
A few days after the release of the song many women started taking sides on Tik Tok, saying that Shakira shouldn’t have stooped that low. But I mean, wouldn’t you if you found out a younger woman was sleeping with your man whom you’ve had two kids with, eating your food in the house and thinking they can both get away with it?
A few days later, Miley Cyrus made a comeback releasing a new song about self-love on the day of her ex-husband Liam Hemsworth. Miley even filmed the video in the old house they used to share, where he supposedly cheated on her multiple times. While Cyrus wasn’t as direct as Shakira, she left us a few easter eggs to gather if you know their rocky history together.
The song is a remake of the original “When I was your man” by Bruno Mars, whom Hemsworth and Cyrus had shared a dance to on their wedding day. Fans on TikTok even began speculating that her gold dress and messy updo were a stab at Hemsworth’s Hunger Games co-star Jennifer Lawrence, who was rumored to be one of the women he cheated on Cyrus with. Not to mention, Cyrus is also seen wearing a black suit jacket which fans quickly spotted was a jab for when the former couple appeared at the “Avengers: Endgame” premiere and Miley is seen smiling joking around when the actor told her to “behave.”
While there may be some women who aren’t okay with the way these women dealt with their situations saying “they haven’t moved on” or that “they are being petty”, I believe these women finally stood up for themselves after years of emotional abuse from these men.
If anything, I believe they made a statement by saying that this year will be the year of empowered women. Unfortunately, when these types of things happen, people just like to bring them down just like they did for years with Taylor Swift and Adele for writing songs about their exes.
If men sing all the time about exes who wronged them, why can’t women do the same?
