With the resurgence of in-person celebrity events, the MET Gala has come back in full effect. Although pushed from May to September, a few significant celebrities showed. Some notable people were Timothée Chalamet, Billie Eilish, Rihanna, and Simone Biles. With the theme ‘American’ style, some feel as though the theme was underwhelming and even insensitive to the current climate. Whether or not the theme was a good choice for this year’s event, I have strong opinions on the outfits of the attendees.

Rihanna, a MET Gala veteran, pulled out with a Balenciaga Couture jacket. Many fans were disappointed with this choice since Rihanna usually brings out the best for this event. The puffy black jacket paired with a bejeweled black beanie and massive silver/diamond necklace seemed boring compared to her past looks. With the theme in mind, it begs the question why this designer when Balenciaga is a French designer? This had to be the biggest disappointment of the night.

Someone who did not disappoint though was Tessa Thompson. She wore a short red and black dress with stunning frills and black lines connecting the bodice of the dress. Not only was it a unique piece, but she wore it absolutely beautifully, paired with black leather knee-high boots and a large black hat. This look was super fun and I just love the dress. The movement of the dress and the rich red color was super flattering on Thompson and was a really interesting look. However, this was also a non-American designer, Iris van Herpen, which makes me wonder where the theme fits with any part of the event.

Kacey Musgraves wore a Ralph Lauren set. The skirt was metallic silver and looked stunning on Musgraves, however, the black long-sleeved top was a bit underwhelming. I feel like she could have added some accessories or another top since this did not look like a ‘MET look.’ As much as I love Musgraves, I’m a little disappointed in this outfit and felt she could have gone bigger, especially since her new album was released. I just thought she’d pop off but not everyone cares about the MET as much as others I’m guessing.

Iman in Dolce-Gabbana was definitely the star of the MET Gala. She had the most gorgeous gold headdress and pantsuit connected to a gold set of rings. Doing more research I learned this was made a month in advance. This outfit stood out against the rest. Not only did it fit the theme but was well made and just stunning.

In the end, there were so many amazing looks. Although I was disappointed in many of the usual stars of the MET, the newbies came out with some incredible looks. With so many celebrities that attended, any viewer would be able to find someone or some look that they liked. Even if you don’t care about fashion, I still think checking the outfits from the MET could be fun for anyone. Let me know which look was your favorite, using the #METGalaUT on Twitter.
