90’s Inspiration from Screen to Store

By MEGAN MYERS

Denim skirts, cropped tops, high-waisted jeans, and choker necklaces have become essentials for a girl’s closet these days. It is too soon to predict whether this oldies trend is a fashion fad or if the new looks are here to stay, but for now, college students are having fun with the ‘90s look.

If you’re planning a night out and need help brainstorming an outfit, watch
an episode of Full House (1987-1995). D.J. Tanner’s wardrobe is sure to get you compliment after compliment. Her go to ensemble of high-waisted shorts with a graphic tee tucked underneath is as an easy outfit to replicate. Love Culture has a “90s Revival” section on their website that gives online shoppers an opportunity to browse through oldies inspired apparel like patched boxy jackets, silky bomber jackets and overalls.

When taking a look at the popular television show 90210, the styles seen in the 1990 version are more likely to resemble today’s styles than the version of the series released in 2008. A character favorite from the 1990 show is flared jeans, which Free People now carries a wide variety of.

Another trendy item you can find online at Tobi or Nasty Gal is a college girl’s best friend: the crop top. In the popular sitcom Saved by the Bell (1989-1992) Kelly Kapowski sported a cropped top in just about every episode. If you want to dress up a crop top, pair it with a high waisted leather skirt and add some heels to jazz up the outfit. If you’re looking for a casual and relaxed look, pair a crop top with any high- waisted bottoms.

Sabrina the Teenage Witch used her magical powers to race to the top of the fashion charts, bringing her black choker necklace and matching cat, Salem, with her. Like Sabrina, you can pair a black choker with almost anything. Girls are sporting them with dresses, tees, and tanks to add a bit of edge to their outfits.

Popular stores such as Forever 21 also caught onto this nostalgic fashion style’s return. Walking through the mall, it’s not difficult to find a store carrying a choker necklace. Better yet, you’re sure to spot several being worn by students while walking around campus. Check the website Etsy if you’re looking for some unique handmade chokers.

If Saved by the Bell, Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Full House don’t inspire you, don’t fret. Grab some gel pens, popin a VHS (or stream some Netflix), and take notes from your new personal stylist: Clueless’ Cher Horowitz. The 1995 movie is filled with classic looks and iconic lines. Character Cher strutted around her campus in a yellow plaid skirt. If you want to release your inner Cher you can find plenty of plaid skirt options at Nordstrom’s or on their website. Even heartthrob Justin Bieber has been sporting the plaid skirt on his recent tour, Purpose.

Perhaps the most nostalgic show for all ‘90s kids is The Amanda Show (1999-2002). Young Amanda Bynes continuously wore tie-dye tees, layered choker necklaces, and patterned high-waisted skirts in the classic Nickelodeon comedy series.Urban Outfitters has tons of throwback tie dye items to choose from, including retro band tees, dresses, hoodies, swimsuits and socks.
