The company was started in 1995 by a man named Steve Capitano and is now in four different locations in the Tampa Bay area. The closest Cappy’s to the University of Tampa is located at 3200 West Bay to Bay Boulevard.
Cappy’s serves two basic types of pizza: the classic New York style and the deep dish Chicago style. The Chicago style is not as common in the Tampa area and is extremely delicious, but it comes with a bit of a longer wait. The New York style is the way to go if you’re stopping in for a quick lunch.
Both have a variety of toppings to choose from including “Cappy” which consists of pepperoni, ham, green peppers, sausage and mushrooms. If you’re a vegetarian or just not into mixing your meats try the “Veggie.” It has mushrooms, onions, tomatoes, black olives and green peppers. If you prefer to keep it simple, Cappy’s offers the usual pizza toppings along with plain cheese or pepperoni.
Cappy’s also offers a variety of salads and bread sticks as appetizers. They also have calzones if you like your pizza turned inside out. These menu items come with a variety of fillings that are similar to the pizza toppings.
The quality and taste of the food served at Cappy’s is beyond any pizzeria experience I have ever had. The Chicago style pizza is great if you want to try a different take on the typical flat pizza. It may look like a lot of tomato sauce but once you take a bite you get the blend of cheese and dough hidden underneath.
The pizza is pretty affordable, ranging from $8.50 to $20, and the atmosphere is fit for any kind of outing. Their busiest days are Fridays and Saturdays so if you’re not big on crowds, try to go on the weekdays. Business hours are 5-9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday. On Fridays and Saturdays, Cappy’s is open from 5-10 p.m.
