Senior Nick Chmura, finance major and SG president, is extremely honored to be awarded for his startup Internet site, BetterBoo, which is a gift suggestion application. His startup company was named one of the coolest college startups by Inc. Magazine for 2012. Chmura was awarded under the category of Consumer Products & Services Industry.
Other industries represented by students include Advertising & Marketing, Education, Entertainment, Food & Beverage, Health, IT Services, and Retail & Software.
According to their website, “the 2012 class of our annual college startups were founded on the mission to give back to the world’s communities, be on the cutting-edge of innovation, and have fun while doing it.”
President of Student Government, member of UT Entrepreneurs and an Intern at Uhsome Media and Marketing, Chmura is extremely honored. He said, “I have always found that the harder I work the luckier I get, and I have been working hard.”
Last year, Chmura nominated himself for the coolest college startup and they e-mailed him back requesting an interview. He had a phone interview in mid-February.
Chmura is really humbled to have been awarded because he believes that all of the other companies are just so amazing. His company is a Web based application that uses Facebook and Amazon to help users find and buy gifts. Chmura launched his company in 2011, receiving $40,000 in seed funding.
In 2010, he was the first UT student to participate in the competitive CEO Business Pitch competition. Chmura’s pitch for BetterBoo.com was placed in the top 12 out of 99 students. Chmura said, “I truly don’t feel deserving; I am the biggest critic of BetterBoo, but it’s not to get this pat on the back.”
