Some of sports’ greatest stories began when a player filled in for an injured teammate. One University of Tampa softball player’s is making the most of her opportunity.
Kari Walsh is a junior pitcher from Palm City, Fla. She took Deanna Henriott’s spot in the Spartans’ rotation when a torn hip labrum sidelined Henriott for the season.
“Obviously we were upset because Deanna was a big part of our team,” Walsh said. “But she still supports us and she’s out there every day. She’ll be back next year.”
Walsh, a two-way player at Jensen Beach High School, began her UT career as a first baseman.
She batted 3-8 as a freshman and 6-21 the next year as a sophomore reserve. She pitched one game, a five-inning victory, in 2009.
Walsh’s game plan was changed this year as she is now a full-time starting pitcher. The left-hander started 11 of the Spartans’ first 28 games.
“It’s definitely been a lot of pressure,” Walsh said. “It’s a different mindset when you’re pitching, so it took some time to get back into it. But I think we’re doing better than we expected.”
Through April 6, Walsh holds an 8-4 record with a 2.49 ERA. She has 67 strikeouts to just 20 walks allowed in 78.2 innings.
Walsh attributes some of her success to her relationship with teammate Becky Vyzas. The sophomore catcher not only leads the team in hitting with a .372 average, she also leads the pitching staff.
“It’s awesome,” Walsh said. “I love Becky on and off the field. She definitely keeps me in the game. If we start falling apart, she’s always the first one out there to get me back into it.”
Just as she did when Henriott joined the Spartans, senior pitcher Heather Van Landingham gives Walsh advice and encouragement. In turn, Walsh gives Van Landingham some rest.
“Kari does a good enough job that Heather doesn’t need to come on in relief,” UT softball Head Coach Leslie Kanter said.
Walsh returned her coach’s appreciation.
“Coach understands how hard it’s been for me to get back into pitching,” Walsh said. “So if I need somebody to talk to, she’s always there to support me.”
Walsh and the women Spartans will be in action on Friday, April 9 at 7 p.m. when they take on Sunshine State Conference rival Rollins.
