When we began this semester way back in August, it seemed like Thanksgiving Break was out of sight. Everyone was refreshed and well rested from a joyous summer; ready to conquer another semester.
However, as it inevitably happens, the semester ends up conquering students for the most part. Now, students linger in the library until the last available minute, but it’ll only get more hectic from here.
Reprieve will be here soon in the form of Thanksgiving Break, and, as students picked up their copy of The Minaret this week, they now have what we hope to be some good reading material for their travels home.
Some may be waiting in the airport already. Others may have decided to stay in Florida for the next few days of relaxation.
Last-minute papers have been written, spring registration is open to everyone and bags have been packed. Yes, break is finally here.
The Minaret staff definitely feels the pressure of the next few weeks. With only a few more issues left, how can we make our mark on 2009?
With the constant stress of deadlines, in school and work, students need to find time for themselves.
We encourage “Starbucks runs,” dinner dates and movie nights. Maybe even take a half hour for a hot shower or a call to home.
In the hustle and bustle of credit hours full of homework, practice and studying, students often forget what’s really important—health. Health doesn’t just refer to physical wellness, but emotional condition as well. We can exercise and take our vitamins, but we’re all subject to emotional wear and tear. It’s important to know how to deal with stress, loneliness and anxiety; find healthy avenues for catharsis.
Returning to physical health, we know how hard it is to get a full 7-8 hours of sleep per night. We also know how difficult it is to get on a regular eating pattern. But as the weeks progress, student sickness is dominating the campus in record-breaking numbers.
For those who remain on campus, don’t feel like all the excitement is gone. This is the perfect opportunity to meet new people and explore the city with this abundance of free time. Visit the used bookstore downtown, Old Tampa Book Company, or stroll down Bayshore and Hyde Park.
Students staying on campus also need to take extra caution. With little activity going on, try to not walk around late at night. But if you do, make sure to travel in a group.
There was yet another unfortunate incident when an unidentified male assaulted another student this week, this time on campus. If you ever feel uncomfortable walking around campus, don’t hesitate to call UT security (ext. 3333).
Finally, since we’re nearing the finish line of this semester, now more than ever it is important to manage your time wisely. Space out your work during the break so that you don’t burn out before finals. After break there are only two more weeks of classes. Make these count.
No matter where you go, The Minaret would like to wish everyone a safe and peaceful break.
