This summer has produced many things, but along with the perpetual sunburns and new songs on the radio, this summer has given us a multitude of new movies.
One of the most popular films this summer was “Transformers II,” starring Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox. If you haven’t caught this one yet, it’s definitely on the must-see list. The special effects and action-packed plot make the 150 minutes worth your while. Fans are given the opportunity to view it in IMAX as well.
“Angels and Demons,” the second movie of the “Da Vinci Code” series, debuted in the first few weeks of the summer. It was epically long, but “Demons” is definitely a worthwhile flick.
The most laughs this summer came from “The Hangover.” The outrageous comedy from the director of “Old School” is about a bachelor party in Vegas and everything that could possibly go wrong, does, beyond all expectations. Hilarity ensues and the movie follows these crazy, four men and their antics all over sin-city. Definitely a must-see.
Harry Potter fans got their fix this summer as well. “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” hit theaters July 15 and follwed Harry as he started his sixth year at Hogwarts. This film entertained veteran Potter fans while beguiling new audience members as well.
Disney-Pixar’s “Up” was a success in animation. This adventure comedy was about Carl Fredricksen, (voice done by Ed Asner), an elderly balloon salesman who tied thousands of balloons to his home and floated away to South America, complete with an irritating 8-year- old stowaway boy scout. Ironically the two bond over their differences in age, beliefs and priorities, and end up realizing the importance of dreams along the way.
“Bruno,” starring the hilarious Sacha Baron Cohen (better known as his alter-ego, Borat), took the number one spot at the box office the week of its opening. This time, Cohen takes on the role of a flamboyantly homosexual, Austrian fashion-reporter. As always with Cohen, this comedy goes places no other would ever dare to go. Tickets are still selling out and it’s a movie that gets funnier with the more times you go and see it.
On the opposite end of the spectrum is “The Taking of Pelham 123,” a drama filled with action and seat-gripping suspense. John Travolta and Denzel Washington make amazing co-stars, each realistically portraying his complex character with startling clarity. If the last movie you saw with John Travolta was Hairspray, his ex-con, psychotic persona in Pelham will literally blow you away. Don’t go back to school without seeing this film.
Finally Johnny Depp and Christian Bale top this summer’s movie premieres with their roles in “Public Enemies.” Based on a true story, the film follows two lives, one of an American gangster, John Dillinger (Depp) and the federal agent who caught him, Melvin Purvis (Bale).
This summer’s flicks certainly did not disappoint fans. With all these choices in box office hits, the season is sure to keep people of ages entertained.
