Acquaintance rape – Sexual battery performed by someone known to the victim.

Conduct system – UT’s conduct system, through the Office of Student Conduct, functions to enforce the Student Code of Conduct through judicial means. The office defines their aim as balancing ‘educational experiences with the protection of the University community.’ Though they are not a criminal court, hearings are heard by either a student board or administrative board. And pending appeal, these decisions have the power to determine consequences for students ranging from admonishing letters to termination of on-campus housing to suspension or even expulsion from school.

Pending suspension – This is a probation status that is a prior step to suspending a student. The UT site says that while a student is on pending suspension, ‘any further violations of policy may result in a recommendation for suspension.’

Sexual assault – ‘any physical contact of a sexual nature without voluntary consent. While associated with rape, sexual assault is much broader and the specifics may vary according to social, political or legal definition.’ This definition is from wikipedia.org.

Sexual misconduct – This is an umbrella term used by the Student Code of Conduct to include sexual harassment, public indecency, voyeurism, sexual battery, and other ‘prohibited sexual activities.’

Student Code of Conduct – This is a written collection of university policies that students are expected to follow while attending UT. According to the conduct system, ‘sanctions may be imposed against a student or student organization for the violation of any student policies that occur on campus,’ as well as some that occur off campus. The code can be found on the UT site at http://static.ut.edu/studentconduct/studentsrights.cfm.

Suspension – UT’s web site defines suspension as follows: ‘the termination of registration as a student at the University after a specific date and for a specified time not to exceed two years.

Before a student is readmitted to the University, the student must attend a session with the dean of students or his/her designee to discuss any relevant conditions of readmission.’ Suspension requires the approval of the dean of students, according to the site.

Victim – After deciding not to search for a name to run, we agreed to refer to the woman who charged Callaway in UT’s conduct system as ‘victim.’ In doing so, we do not mean to imply that she was a victim of rape or sexual assault. But UT’s process found that she was a victim of sexual misconduct, with all the vagaries that such a result entails, and we therefore found ‘victim’ to be acceptable. For The Minaret’s other stories, follow the guide below:
