That’s A Wrap Movie Review: Smart People Good For A Laugh

“Sometimes the smartest people have the most to learn.”

This tagline probably evokes a number of thoughts, but it is the driving theme throughout the movie Smart People.

With the all-star cast that includes the Juno leading lady, Ellen Page, Dennis Quaid, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Thomas Church, the movie was exceptionally entertaining and clever.

The film’s primary focus is a dysfunctional family consisting of a widowed father; his mooching adopted brother, an unexciting and stickler daughter, and a poetic son.

After the father (Dennis Quaid) suffers from a seizure, he is reunited with a former student who treats him in the emergency room.

However, he does not recognize her until another physician tells him that she (Sarah Jessica Parker) once had a crush on him when she was a college student.

Aside from a romantic interest that develops between the father and ER doctor, the father’s adopted brother (Thomas Church) capitalizes on his brother’s condition.

He takes up residence in his brother’s home under the guise that he will be his chauffeur while his ailing brother recuperates. In that time he teaches Ellen Page’s character to lighten up a bit and not take everything so seriously. Then there is the overlooked son who writes poetry and sees everything for what it really is.

This movie meant a lot to me. It really helped elaborate on ideas I have had in the past.

The movie presents the idea that everything is not as straight forward in life as we find in our books or our studies.

It is also very easy to distract ourselves with monotonous tasks each day and allow ourselves to be unhappy.

Smart People emphasizes the message that everyone needs to reach a point in their life where they take a stand, and just live.

Really, this is a terrific movie and I urge everyone to make an effort to see it.

I think most people will find something within the movie they can relate to and take from the movie.

This movie is currently not showing in all theaters. I viewed this movie at the AMC Veterans Theater.

I hope I have persuaded you to go see this great film. Trust me, you won’t regret it.
