While party goers and spring break junkies are sipping on Bahama Mamas, Melissa Hosford will be cutting her spring break and her hair a little short.
On March 8, Hosford will attend a St. Baldrick’s Event at the Horsham Community Center in Horsham, PA., where she’ll shave her head in order to help raise awareness about children fighting cancer.
Hosford came across the St. Baldrick’s event while roaming the Internet last semester. She was looking up Locks of Love and discovered the St. Baldricks Foundation.
One of her goals before she cuts it all off is to raise $3,000. She has received $740 from friends and family since collection started last month.
A friend from UT has already made a donation while faculty members from the nursing department plan on donating before the big cut.
Hosford’s not doing this alone. A male friend from home decided to join up with her, creating the “Dynamic Duo.” Their team goal is to raise $5,000 together.
They will be honoring a young boy named Ricky, who lives close to Hosford back in New Jersey.
“I’m not nervous,” said Hosford. “I’m excited about it. I like doing new and extreme things. It’s something I can do and I can help people out at the same time.”
Hosford has posted up fliers around the nursing building and her RA has helped out by putting up fliers in her dormitory.
She will be donating over 15 inches of her cut hair to Beautiful Lengths, which is similar to the foundation Locks of Love.
To complete her spring break, she’ll be spending time with friends in Naples and plans to put sunscreen on or wear a hat.
Anyone who would like to help Melissa meet her goal can make a donation online by going to http://www.stbaldricks.org and searching for Melissa Hosford.
Over the phone donations can be made to 1-888-899-BALD, ID# S-25502.
