Stephanie Russell HolzTwo Tampa staff members completed the IGN Marathon in Miami on Sunday. Stephanie Russell Holz and Casey Stevens wanted to thank all who contributed to the $4,000 raised for the Angelman Syndrome Foundation. Holz is Assistant Dean of Students and Director of the Vaughn Center. She was joined by Stevens who is the assistant director of civic engagement and P.E.A.C.E. adviser.
The motivation for the feat came from Holz’ nephew John. He was diagnosed with Angelman Syndrome in months following his two year birthday after having experienced seizuer-like motions since he was four months old.
“The syndrome itself doesn’t get a lot of play in the media. That’s why I decided to run this marathon.” said Holz.
Angelman Syndrome is a rare disorder that has often been misdiagnosed in children. It is characterized by intellectual and developmental delays, speech impediments, sleep disturbance, unstable movements, yet all with laughing and a sense of happiness still in the child.
Holz and Stevens not only accomplished the 26.2 mile goal, but more importantly reached their overall goal of raising $4,000.
“It was a rough day on Sunday,” Holz said. “But knowing what we were running for made it all worth it.”
