Erika Hamel, a senior athletic trainer and member of the Sigma Delta Tau sorority, was recently awarded a national scholarship from Order of Omega, the National Greek Leadership Honorary Society.
The Order of Omega serves to recognize outstanding leadership in fraternity and sorority systems on college and university campuses nationwide.
“I’ve worked hard through college, so I’m really thankful that I got the scholarship,” Hamel said. “It’s nice to know that my hard work paid off.”
As well as serving as the President of the Order of Omega chapter here at UT, Hamel has worked with multiple sports teams as a student athletic trainer.
She was the head student trainer last season for the Spartan Baseball team who won their second National Championship.
She has also interned with the Cape Cod baseball league and Clearwater High School’s football team.
“Erika is extremely active in the sports programs here and she works very hard. She takes on a monstrous amount of work but with such a great work ethic she has really excelled to the top of the program and we are very proud of her for all her accomplishments,” said head athletic trainer Scott Brickett.
Two years ago, Hamel started a Sober Sister program within the Sigma Delta Tau sorority.
This is a system in which girls in the sorority sign up to be sober one night of the week and are available to any of the other girls if needed.
Hamel also helped form the SDT and Kappa Sigma Pool Day, an annual event sponsored by student government where the entire school can come out to the pool and swim, grill and socialize with each other.
In addition to her many accomplishments outside of the classroom, Hamel has continued to excel academically throughout her four years at UT and will graduate this May with a major in athletic training and a minor in business administration.
