Tonight at 9:30 p.m. UT students will be holding a candlelight vigil to honor the victims of Virginia Tech by the flag pole behind Plant Hall.
Zoe Oliver, with the help of Resident Life, is sponsoring the event.
Oliver, a student at the University of Tampa, is from the Washington D.C. area and has many friends at Virginia Tech University.
Oliver described her day yesterday as scary and hectic. While sitting in her first class on Monday she received 30 phone calls from friends and family in the area. She left class and received the news of what had happened at Virginia Tech.
She immediately began calling her friends and family but the phone lines were down.
She didn’t get the news that all of her friends were ok until this morning.
One of the reasons she felt moved to hold the candlelight vigil is because the event yesterday reminded her of September 11, 2001. Her school was right across the street from the Pentagon and her and her friend’s watched the plane hit the building. For the fifth anniversary her school didn’t do anything.
“I’m not going to let this go,” she said.
She also wanted to hold the vigil to let the University of Tampa focus their grief on the event.
“Even if you aren’t close, it is still our country, our brothers and sisters,” she said.
