If die hard Bright Eyes fans weren’t already biting at the bit for the new and upcoming album, “Cassadaga,” the release of the “Four Winds” EP might come off as a little bit of a tease. The new Bright Eyes EP consists of one single, “Four Winds” that will be on the new album, “Cassadaga.”
The rest of the songs are considered “B-sides” to “Cassadaga.”
But, don’t be deceived by the classification of these songs as “B-Sides,” they still rise higher than the standards of our modern day music.
“Four Winds” unwinds with soothing sounds while accompanied by Oberst’s song writing capabilities.
Only lyrical geniuses of our times, such as Oberst, can make lyrics like “But when great Satan’s gone/the whore of Babylon/She just can’t sustain the pressure where it’s placed She caves as catchy as he does”.
The lyrics deal with modern day issues that Oberst has been very outspoken on, like organized religion, war and most controversial social issues.
Bright Eyes, usually followed and praised by a set of fans(could be considered “cult” like), is not for everyone.
One major flaw that people tend to associate Bright Eyes with is the depressing mood the music portrays and even sometimes puts you in.
“Four Winds” does bring this to the table as a Bright Eyes supporter would expect.
But honestly, what is music without meaning or passion? Bright Eyes brings heartbreak, love, joy, agony and everything else in the emotional spectrum to your ears every time you listen to the music.
Some may criticize the band for the melancholy effect that runs fluid with their noise, but they offer arguably one of the most meaningful, definitive and inimitable sounds of our songwriter/music generation.
Bottom Line: 7/10
