Weekend Baseball Attendance Disgraceful

If a freshman pitcher defeats Division I Harvard, but more Crimson fans are there than UT fans, did the freshman pitcher really record a victory? For all four games last weekend it seemed like Florida Gulf Coast and Harvard had more fans than Tampa. Friday night and Saturday afternoon was understandable. Friday night because most UT students were partying, although the game was over at 10, so there would have been plenty of time to drink after the game. And maybe the whole campus was at the beach on Saturday afternoon. But honestly what was the whole UT campus doing Sunday afternoon? It was kind of sad that there were just as many, if not more fans, that made the trip from Massachusetts, as there were students who made the five-minute walk from their dorm to the field. The Minaret sports section has already beaten the horse to death when it comes to the issue of lack of school spirit, but the Division II National Championship basketball game is the main reason for this article. Barton College, a school with a full-time enrollment of less than 1,000, defeated Winona State in one of the most amazing finishes ever. Anthony Atkinson scored 10 points in under 45 seconds to lead his school to the win. He released a lay-up just before the buzzer to give his team an incredible comeback win. But what was even more amazing was that this tiny school from North Carolina had their fans rushing the floor after the game. Although the game was played in Springfield, Mass. students from Barton College made the long trip to see their team play. I don’t expect Tampa fans to travel to see the team’s play, but if a small school like Barton can get a large fan base to travel over 600 miles to a game, UT students should be able to outnumber Harvard fans at a home game. There will always be the excuse that since UT doesn’t have a football team so there is no reason to get excited about athletics. But the Spartans have two national championship teams, and the Division II National Championship game showed that D-II sports offer the same excitement and drama of Division I and professional sports. So go to a baseball game in the next few weeks or attend a tennis match, at least be able to outnumber the opposing team’s fans.
