Whitney AllenThe women’s soccer team took their first steps towards the NCAA II quarterfinals with a 3-0 victory over the Nova Southeastern Sharks. The victory came in the first round of the NCAA II South Regional. Despite the chilly conditions, UT’s offense remained sizzling with constant pressure on the Nova Southeastern defense. They totaled 24 shots on goal to the Sharks’ six. They consistently controlled the ball and in the rare occasions that Nova Southeastern handled the ball, several Tampa defenders were swarming the player. The first goal of the game came from forward Jocelyn Charette at 14:34 in the first half. Charette controlled the ball to the left of the goal. She sneaked the ball past the diving block attempt from goalkeeper Megan Kim. The goal gave Tampa their first lead of the night. Defender Nicole Murphy and midfielder Katie Callahan were each credited with an assist. The Lady Spartans made it 2-0 on Charette’s second goal of the game. The goal came at 26:21 that was set up by Murphy and forward Shelby Kuni. Just before the end of the first half, Tampa added their last goal of the night. Charette battled for the ball against her defender on the right side of the goal. Despite falling to the ground, Charette was able to pass the ball off to midfielder Ashley Flateland. Flateland then passed the ball to Kuni who promptly kicked the ball into the net. Charette was the leader for the Lady Spartans on the night. The freshman from Lakewood, Wash. has had an immediate impact of the team, scoring 17 goals this year. After the game, she gave a lot of credit to the players. “I think we all worked real hard,” she said. Tampa then went on to play West Florida on Sunday, Nov. 5 at 1 p.m. West Florida advanced after an exciting three-round shootout win against St. Leo University. A win put the Lady Spartans in the NCAA quarterfinal for the first time in school history.
