Coachella Brings “Yo Gabba Gabba!” Back for a Nostalgic Performance

By Gloria Falach

This year’s Coachella gave us a blast from the past with the nostalgic characters from our childhood. The Yo Gabba Gabba! cast made a special appearance on stage on April 12.

Yo Gabba Gabba! was a children’s musical program aired from 2007 to 2015 on Nickelodeon. The show aimed to make kids dance and sing with the five friendly monsters: Muno, Brobee, Foofa, Toodee, and Plex.

The most popular performance from the group’s setlist, which has been posted all over social media, was their dance to their iconic song “Party In My Tummy.” They had a video of vegetables and fruit singing, similar to the show, playing in the background. In the video, the fruits were happy that they were enjoying the party in the stomach of the character, but the vegetables were not happy since they were not being eaten.

This show was very popular, with its majority audience being preschool age groups. However, as an adult, looking at this performance makes no one question how weird the “Party In My Tummy” song is.

The group hasn’t played a solo set at Coachella since 2010, said Blunt Magazine.

According to the creators of the show, Christian Jacobs and Scott Schultz, they were invited back after fans went wild for the characters just walking around last year.

As random as the performance was, the fans went wild for what seemed like the weirdest performance of the night.

During the show, something would happen that made you question if you were watching  “Coachella or trapped in some hyper-colour rave daycare,” said Blunt Magazine.

The crowd looked like they loved it and enjoyed the performance.

Among the multiple special guests the group had performed with, the original human host of Yo Gabba Gabba!, DJ Lance Rock, performed with them, creating nostalgia for many who watched the original series.

During their set, Yo Gabba Gabba! collaborators, Thundercat and Flavor Flav, performed alongside the characters. Thundercat performed his co-written track “The Orange Cat’s Special Time Outdoors,” and Flavor Flav rapped the “I Love Bugs” song.

At the end of the setlist, the Yo Gabba Gabba! group had special guests perform a cover of “Rainbow Connection” from The Muppet Movie. These guests are seen as a random group of individuals meshed together. The special guests included “Weird Al” Yankovic, DJ Lance Rock, Kammy Kam, Miyavi, Thundercat, Portugal. The Man, Bozo the Clown (David Arquette), and Paul Williams, along with guest appearances from other puppets.

Many ask why they were singing “Rainbow Connection,” since the song had a significant connection with the Muppets and was even included in multiple Muppets movies throughout the years. Williams co-wrote the song, and in 2008 he performed the song during an episode of the Yo Gabba Gabba! show.

The Yo Gabba Gabba! performance at this year’s Coachella can be seen as weird and nostalgic by its audience. Whatever the reviews of the performance are, this blast from the past was enjoyed by many Coachella viewers. Will we see Yo Gabba Gabba! perform again next year with more special (or random) guests?
