The 2024 film starring Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh, We Live in Time, presents the story of true love that goes through all the good times and the bad by staying at each other’s side.
This is one of the greatest love stories that has ever been told. Most Hollywood films revolve around drama, trying to grasp the viewer’s attention. However, this film is simply full of true love and humor, a type of humor I think is only found when you have that person. While there were parts that were meant to be emotional and tug at your heartstrings, it was retaliated with a joke that broke the tension and brought relief to both the characters as well as the audience.
The Meet Cute
We Live in Time was unlike any other Hollywood “meet cute” where Almut (Florence Pugh) hits Tobias (Andrew Garfield) with her car while he was walking back from the gas station to his hotel room in a white robe and slippers. When Tobias wakes up in the hospital and Almut explains what happened to him, he does not get angry. He simply asks, “What happened to my underwear?” This was a preview of how their relationship was going to work in the future. A happy-go-lucky couple that is always making one another laugh.
The First Date
After spending the night together, Tobias is unsure if he should stay with Almut for the day or leave before she wakes up. This is a common misconception in films, but Almut goes against that and says, “Who says?” Who says that two people who have just met cannot spend the entire day together? Who says that two people have to play this cat and mouse game with each other to try and build some form of connection?
Father of the Year Award
When Almut and Tobias find out they are pregnant, a montage leads you through their pregnancy up until the birth of their child. Tobias is winning the award of “super dad” by taking notes at every doctor’s appointment, monitoring how Almut is feeling, and making sure she stays calm and collected throughout the pregnancy. One of the most humorous and relatable scenes is when Almut and Tobias are sitting in the bathtub eating cookies together. He hands her two cookies, one of which she eats and the other that she lays on her very pregnant stomach. This is a simple piece of humor, but it is so wholesome and full of love that we all want to have.
Bringing up Baby
When Almut goes into labor, they are stuck in traffic and struggling to get to the hospital. When Tobias returns to the car after trying to see what is going on, he notices that Almut is no longer in the car and wobbles her way to the gas station, where she is scouting out food to munch on. She then goes into the bathroom. When Tobias goes to check on her, she says, “Well, I thought I needed a poo,” but instead, she is about to have the baby.
She then gets locked in the bathroom, and Tobias has to kick the door in and try to stay calm in this intense situation. He is on the phone with the hospital, being walked through the situation while rubbing Almut’s back and telling her how amazing she is doing. This scene, while in real life would have been incredibly stressful, was such a belly laugh to the audience and brought tears to everyone’s eyes.
This just proves how intense their love is for each other and that they both are able to stay calm and collected during this situation and smile once their baby is in their arms.
What Have We Learned?
This is the type of relationship that most people want, or maybe that is just my opinion. But the thought of having someone who makes me laugh every day, is there with me through the hard times, and reminds me that they are there to support me and love me is such a green flag. We should always enjoy each other’s company and know that this is our forever person when they do something slightly annoying. In my opinion, Almut and Tobias are the perfect role model couple — a relationship that was cut too short — but while it lasted, it seemed truly magical.
