TAMPA, Fla.– Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2024, was Election Day. This election was a hefty one for Florida. Not only did residents vote for the 47th president, but there were six amendments on the ballot. 

On ABC, election coverage began at 7 p.m. EST. Trump took two predicted wins due to higher electoral college votes in Indiana and Kentucky.

Kamala Harris took the predicted win for Vermont. This was early at 7:20 p.m. as the early predicted wins were announced.

At 8:30 p.m., Trump had won the states of Alabama, Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and West Virginia. He had the lead in electoral votes at 95.

Harris had taken the states of Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Vermont. Her electoral votes were at 35 as of 8:30 p.m. 

Pennsylvania was one of the swing states that determined the winner of the presidency. Harris has taken significant leads in Philadelphia, which was more than projected. 

In Florida, at 8:36 p.m., all amendments started to be counted. 

Amendment One was the Partisan School Board Elections and had a prediction of yes at 54.8%. 

Amendment Two was about the right to fish and hunt and had a prediction of yes at 67.3%. 

Amendment Three was the legalization of marijuana, which had a winner of no at 44.3%. 

Amendment Four was about the Right to Abortion Initiative and had a prediction of yes at 57.1%. It would need 60% to pass. 

Amendment Five was the annual inflation adjustment for property valuations, which had a prediction of yes at 66%.

Amendment Six was to repeal public financing for statewide campaigns and had a prediction of yes at 50.3%.

At 9:00 p.m., Trump had taken other states including Arkansas, Louisiana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming. This put him at 120 Electoral College votes. Harris had taken the states of Delaware, Illinois, New Jersey, and New York. This gave her 99 Electoral College votes. 

At 10:12 p.m., Trump had taken the states of Missouri, Ohio, Texas, and Utah. He had 198 Electoral College votes. Harris had 109 electoral votes with the state of Colorado. At 10:26 p.m., Harris took the District of Columbia, which put her at 112. 

At 11:02 p.m., Harris had taken the states of California and Washington; this put her at 179 electoral votes. Trump had taken the states of Iowa and Montana, which put him at 214 electoral votes.

As of 12:03 a.m., Trump was leading Pennsylvania at 83.3% of expected votes. Harris had taken the states of Hawaii, Oregon, New Mexico, and Virginia. 

At 12:37 a.m., there were no updates regarding which candidate had taken which state. ABC said, “Be prepared for the long haul, as some states including Arizona can take up to 13 days to count all votes.” 

At 12:39 a.m., Trump took Georgia, putting him at 246 electoral votes. 

Trump swept two of the most important states in this election: Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Twenty-nine electoral votes later, this put him past the 270 mark. 

It was declared at 6 a.m. on Nov. 6, 2024, that Donald Trump had become the 47th president of the United States.

Florida Amendment Results (each needed a 60% or higher threshold) 

  • Amendment One- failed 
  • Amendment Two- passed and will become part of the Florida Constitution
  • Amendment Three- failed
  • Amendment Four- failed
  • Amendment Five- passed and will become part of the Florida Constitution 
  • Amendment Six- failed

President Donald J. Trump will be sworn into office on Jan. 20, 2025, for his second presidential term.
