Florida Amendment 4 was approved in Feb. 2024 to appear on this year’s ballot for the 2024 election.
Early voting started on Oct. 21, and the state government is still pushing to get it removed.
Gov. Ron DeSantis said in multiple press conferences that the amendment has loose terminology and will be dangerous.
Floridians Protecting Freedom has said that the state of Florida should not have a say in abortions.
DeSantis and this organization have been going back and forth over the past few months over potential fraudulent signatures and commercials, and there were lawsuits.
On Oct. 22, Floridians Protecting Freedom held a virtual press conference with some doctors, sharing their reasons why they support Amendment 4.
“We are here to discuss how cruel and extreme Florida abortion rules are,” said campaign director Lauren Brenzel.
Brenzel said doctors are putting their livelihood and freedom to the side to protect Florida women.
“Over 800 doctors are endorsing Amendment 4,” she said.
Brenzel said a “yes” vote would restore health care between women and doctors and keep the government out of the offices.
The endorsement letter is from Florida’s physicians who have signed and supported this amendment.
“As physicians, we have sworn an oath to do no harm and to provide effective, evidence-based, treatment to our patients. But since Florida’s initial abortion ban took effect in July 2022, medical providers across the state have been forced to make decisions counter to that oath. We must choose between following an unyielding law and denying our patients essential medical care, or providing that care while risking loss of our licenses and even facing criminal charges,” read paragraph three of the endorsement letter.
On Tuesday, Oct. 22, DeSantis held a press conference in Jacksonville with physicians who supported his argument on abortion.
“You have exceptions for rape, incest, human trafficking and when the child has a fatal fetal abnormality, that will prevent him and her from surviving,” said DeSantis during the conference, according to FOX 13.
The FOX 13 article added that DeSantis said the Florida law allows for abortions up until a baby’s heart is detected and the above claims are lies.
Both sides of the abortion claims say the language is broad or the terminology is unclear.
The fight for Amendment 4 — to pass or not to pass — will be up to voters this election.
