An Exciting MLB Season Underway

By Leila Serrano

We’re now one week deep into the 2024 MLB season, and amongst the flow of victories and losses, one surprising fact stands out: the Tigers remain undefeated. Yes, you read that correctly!

As the Brewers and Pirates each tasted defeat for the first time on Wednesday, the Tigers continued to defy expectations, maintaining a perfect record through seven days of play.

But it’s not just the Tigers turning heads. Hot starts have ignited excitement across the league, with both unexpected and anticipated contenders making their mark. Take, for instance, the Yankees, whose newest addition, Juan Soto, has yet to spend time showcasing his talent at the plate. Meanwhile, Mookie Betts has been a force to reckon with, launching five home runs for the Dodgers, a team already stacked with stars like Shohei Ohtani and Freddie Freeman.

The Brewers triumphed over the Mets in their series at Citi Field, but not without a fair share of drama, setting the stage for a compelling showdown. Rhys Hoskins, a recent addition to the Brewers’ roster, found himself at the center of attention in the series opener on Friday, earning the wrath of Mets fans after what Jeff McNeil perceived as a debatable slide into second base in an attempt to disrupt a double play. This sparked a bench-clearing incident, adding intensity to the atmosphere. However, Hoskins responded distinctly in Saturday’s game.

Now, the question on every fan’s mind: Is your favorite team also off to a blazing start, and can they sustain this momentum? Or are you cautiously hoping that the first week’s performance doesn’t foreshadow the season ahead?

Considering their rich history and formidable talent, last year’s failure to clinch a postseason spot was a significant disappointment for the New York Yankees.

It marked the first absence from the postseason since 2016, leaving fans and management alike eager for a dramatic turnaround in 2024.

To revamp their lineup, the Yankees executed a bold offseason strategy, with the highlight being the acquisition of Juan Soto from the San Diego Padres.

Soto, a three-time All-Star, showcased his prowess with 35 home runs, 109 RBIs, and a .275 batting average last season, making him a top contender for this year’s American League MVP title. With stars like Soto, Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, and Gerrit Cole, the Yankees are underway to be a powerhouse in the AL this season. Their journey begins on the road against the 2022 champion Houston Astros, setting the stage for what promises to be an electrifying 2024 campaign.

Tyler O’Neill made history in Major League Baseball with his remarkable feat during the eighth inning. The outfielder for the Red Sox slammed a solo home run off Mariners reliever Cody Bolton, marking his fifth consecutive Opening Day home run.

This achievement solidified O’Neill’s place in the archives of baseball history, as he became the first player ever to accomplish such a remarkable act. His timely contribution helped the Boston team by extending their lead to 6-4, providing crucial insurance in the game. O’Neill’s journey to this milestone began with the Cardinals, where he hit Opening Day homers from 2020 to 2023 before joining the Red Sox in a trade during the offseason.

So, as the season unfolds and the drama intensifies, buckle up for a thrilling ride through the highs and lows of America’s favorite pastime.
