The nominations for the 2024 Oscars ceremony have been in for quite some time now, and many people are still expressing their disappointment about the “Barbie” nomination snubs.
It has been said that the film has received eight nominations, but many find it unfair that Ryan Gosling has been nominated for the best supporting actor. At the same time, Margot Robbie, who had the role of Barbie, was snubbed a nomination for best actress.
Even though viewers believe that Gosling did a fantastic job in the film and played the role of Ken better than anyone else could have, they still find it frustrating that Robbie did not get a nomination in this category for the film, especially since she was the main character and producer.
Others were also excited that a film directed by a woman did this phenomenally and made nearly $1.5 billion, so it was expected to see this representation of women with the nominees for this year.
Not only did Robbie get snubbed of a nomination, but Greta Gerwig, the director of “Barbie,” also did not get a nomination for best director.
Because the film symbolizes “women empowerment” and talks about struggles that women have to face along with women in different generations connecting, viewers find it ironic how a man was nominated because of the film, but not the women who had a massive part in it and are the reason why this movie became what it is.
Robbie and Gerwig not being nominated for these categories is a perfect example of what the movie dives into how a woman can make great accomplishments. However, it will still not be enough, and “it is impossible to be a woman,” as the movie expresses.
Many have said that this situation “proves the movie right” and shows the many unfortunate circumstances that women have to face in today’s society.
This has made others believe that the film’s meaning was overlooked instead of understood.
The fans of the film and Robbie aren’t the only ones who are let down by this nomination snub. Gosling came out with a statement expressing his disappointment, saying, “There is no Ken without Barbie.”
“To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement,” said the actor. “Their work should be recognized along with the other very deserving nominees.”
Although Gosling stated that he is highly honored to be nominated and able to get the opportunity to play Ken, he still expresses that Robbie and Gerwig are the two most responsible for this history-making film and deserve all the recognition.
Even though Robbie was snubbed in getting a nomination for Best Actress, she did get a nomination in the Best Picture category as a producer.
The social media buzz surrounding the Oscar nomination snubs has continued since they were released on Jan. 23. Many are now intrigued to find out how many awards the film will receive when it comes. The 96th annual Academy Awards will air on ABC on March 10 at 7 p.m.
