Another IPhone Release: Is it Worth the Upgrade?

By Nisha Punwani

The release of the iPhone 14, on Sept. 16, was long-awaited, and came along with the new iOS 16 updates. The release of the iPhone 14 was a bit of a letdown. With not many differences from the iPhone 13, it seemed as if upgrading your phone was just unnecessary.

The iPhone 13 and 14 have no significant differences and have the same shape, size and look. With the iPhone 13, the color options were green, blush pink, black, white, green and red. The iPhone 14, instead of blush pink, has a lavender color and sky blue. You also cannot get the iPhone 14 in green.

The iPhone 14 has a better battery, but the other features seem similar. For those who are not big into technological features, there aren’t any big differences between the iPhone 13 and 14. The iPhone 14 Pro from the 13 Pro main difference is the island. The island is the top portion of the iPhone 14 Pros screen. You are now able to interact with the island. Another addition to the iPhone 14 pro is the camera.

Faith Ibrahim, an apple employee, said that the iPhone 14 Pro is more for people who need the camera quality and additional features, but if you are someone who uses a phone just as a phone, the iPhone 14 is better suited for you.

The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro come with crash detection and SOS via satellite. If you require emergency services but cannot call the police, a signal will go out indicating your location and that you need help if you point your phone to a satellite. This feature can be helpful and save many lives, but upgrading to the iPhone 14 just for this feature will have to depend on how much you feel you may need it.

The iPhone 14 Plus, released Oct. 7, has the same features as the iPhone 14 but has a bigger screen. It does not come with the iPhone 14 Pro’s new dynamic island.

Every year, Apple releases a new iPhone, and sometimes there are significant changes with the iPhone that some may deem as a reason to upgrade. Sometimes upgrading is also unnecessary if you do not use your phone for any reason other than making calls and listening to music. If you have the iPhone 13, there is no reason to upgrade to the iPhone 14.

The iPhone 14 Pro is where the significant differences are, with a much more interactive island. The iPhone 14 does not come with the island and is worth $799; the iPhone 14 Plus is $899. The iPhone 13 price has dropped and is now worth $699. The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max are both worth over thousand dollars.

The iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max are no longer available on the Apple website, and this is because, with every new release of a pro model, they discontinue the previous model.

If you have an iPhone model older than the 12, you may feel in need of an upgrade, then maybe the iPhone 14 is for you. If you have the iPhone 12 and 13, and your phone does not have any particular issues, there is no reason to upgrade, and you can wait for the release next year if there are any significant upgrades to the new iPhones.

The emergency services update and battery is the iPhone 14’s only real update. The iPhone 14 Pro’s interactive island is a significant difference that some people may be interested in. Going to the apple store and playing around with the iPhone 14 pros dynamic island, although fun, for me was unsatisfactory. I have the iPhone 13 and do not plan on upgrading anytime soon.

This update from the apple company just seemed rushed. There were rumors of significant differences that Apple has long turned down. Some rumors were anticipating the return of the touch ID, which many apple users have asked for. Apple has since said that touch ID will never return, thus disappointing many users.

Apple is a big company in many countries, and every year the release of a new phone and IOS update is anticipated. This year seemed to be a bit of a let down. The IOS 15 was an exciting update for many, including editing and deleting text on iMessage, a feature that has long been awaited.

Do not upgrade your phone if you have a release from three years ago. Save your money and maybe next year, there will be a significant difference you were waiting for and think will be helpful. If you use your phone for scrolling through TikTok, there is no need to update. Maybe a better camera quality would be useful if you use your phone for content creation. In the end, save your money, and wait for another year.
