Week One Top 25 Football Recap Holds Surprisng Upsets

The 2022 College Football (CFB) season is officially underway. Week one was filled with exciting games and some surprising upsets. 

These are my recaps of the week one Associated Press (AP) Poll top 25 games along with week two matchups.

Central Michigan @ No. 12 Oklahoma State:

Oklahoma State (OKST) football returned to Stillwater, Okla this week as they defeated Central Michigan University (CMU) 58-44. OKST quarterback Spencer Sanders had a career day passing for 406 yards and six touchdowns. It was a high-scoring game with a lot of offense. 

CMU quarterback, Daniel Richardson threw for an impressive 424 yards and four touchdowns. 

Week Two matchups: 

CMU vs South Alabama

OKST vs Arizona State

My original pick: OKST 42, CMU 17

West Virginia @ No. 17 Pitt:

The University of Pittsburgh (PITT) won their home opener on Thursday, defeating the West Virginia (WVU) Mountaineers 38-31. 

JT Daniels was solid in his WVU debut, passing for 214 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. Meanwhile, senior Kedon Slovis passed for 308 yards and one touchdown in the tough loss. 

A go-ahead pick-6 for the Panthers with 0:43 left in regulation, sealed the deal on their home turf. 

My original pick: Pitt 38, WVU 28

Week two matchups: 

Pitt vs The University of Tennessee 

WVU vs Kansas University

VMI @ No. 22 Wake Forest:

As predicted, Wake Forest (WF) had a smooth-sailing victory at Truist Field, beating VMI 44-10. 

The whole WF offense played exceptionally well including performances by quarterback Mitch Griffis (throwing for 288 yards and three touchdowns), running back Christian Turner (rushing for 100 yards and two scores), and wide receiver Taylor Morin (five receptions for 74 yards and one score). 

My original pick: WF 52, VMI 10

Week two matchups: 

VMI vs Bucknell University

WF vs Vanderbilt University

Western Michigan @ No. 15 Michigan St:

The lone top 25 matchup ended with a blowout victory over the Michigan State University (MSU) Spartans, defeating Western Michigan University (WMU)  35-13. 

Though a blowout, WMU had a stretch in which they were within one score midway through the third quarter. However, MSU took charge and extended their lead into victory. 

Junior Spartan quarterback Payton Thorne had an impressive opener going 12/24 for 233 yards and four touchdowns. 

My original pick: MSU 40, W Michigan 13

Week two matchups:

MSU vs Akron University

WMU vs Ball State University 

Sam Houston @ No. 6 Texas A&M:

Kyle Field was in a happy mood as Texas A&M University (TA&M) shutout Sam Houston State University (SHSU) 31-0. 

This game was all TA&M with the defensive racking up one fumble recovery, one interception, and three sacks. 

Aggie quarterback Haynes King threw for 364 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions. 

My original pick: TXAM 31, Sam Houston 14

Week two matchups: 

TA&M vs Appalachian State university

SHSU vs Northern Arizona University

Colorado State University @ No. 8 Michigan:

The Michigan Wolverines opened up their 2022 campaign with a big win over the Colorado State University (CSU) Rams, 51-7.

Senior Wolverines quarterback Cade McNamara passed for 136 yards and one score vs the Rams, while star running back Blake Corrum rushed for 76 yards and one touchdown. 

Michigan opened up their season with confidence, giving Jim Harbough and the rest of the team hopes of a playoff berth. 

My original pick: Michigan 42, CSU 7

Week two matchups: 

CSU vs Middle Tennessee State University

Michigan vs Hawaii University 

No. 13 North Carolina State University @ East Carolina University 

First off, this game was incredible. The victorious North Carolina State University (NCST) wolfpack hung on to beat the East Carolina University (ECU) Pirates 21-20. 

The last minute of the game decided the winner. Wolfpack’s quarterback Devin Leary (17/33, 211 yards, one touchdown, one interception) threw an interception with 31 seconds to go while up 21-14. ECU then turned that into a touchdown, followed by a heartbreaking extra point miss by the Pirates. 

With hope clicking away for the Pirates, Holten Athers (25/41, 267 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions) and his offense got to the NCST 24 yard line, giving kicker Owen Daffer a 42 yard field goal attempt. 

Daffer misses the field goal and NCST hangs on. 

My pick: ECU 21, NCSU 17

Week two matchups:

NCST vs Charleston Southern University 

ECU vs Old Dominion 

No. 11 Oregon University @ No. 3 University of Georgia 

Arguably the most disappointing matchup of week 1, the Bulldogs of the University of Georgia (UGA) defeated the Ducks of Oregon University (ORU) 49-3.

It was all Bulldogs in this game, looking to repeat as National Champions. Stetson Bennett went off with 368 passing yards and two touchdowns, while transfer quarterback Bo Nix did not have an impressive debut for the Ducks (173 yards and two touchdowns). 

My pick: UGA 27, Oregon 24

Week two matchups:

ORE vs Eastern Washington University 

UGA vs Samford

University of Texas El Paso @ No. 9 Oklahoma University 

New University of Oklahoma (OU) head coach Brent Venables got his first victory on Saturday defeating University of Texas El Paso (UTEP) 45-13. 

All of the Sooners played exceptional with the defense only holding UTEP to 316 yards.

Junior Sooner quarterback Dillon Gabriel passed for 233 yards and two scores whilst running back Eric Gray rushed for 102 yards. 

Meanwhile for UTEP, quarterback Gavin Hardison passed for 244 yards. The Miners have lost their second consecutive game. 

My original pick: OU 41, UTEP 9

Week two matchups:

OU vs Kent State University

UTEP vs New Mexico State University 

Bethune Cookman @ No. 16 University of Miami 

The University of Miami (Miami) cruised their way to an opening week victory vs Bethune Cookman, beating them to an impressive 70-13 score. 

The lone bright spot for Bethune Cookman University (BCU) was a touchdown connection from quarterback Jalon Jones to running back Que’Shaun Byrd. 

For Miami, sophomore quarterback Tyler Van Dyke had a day with 193 passing yards and two touchdowns, with running back duo Henry Parrish Jr. and Thaddius Franklin Jr. combining for five scores. 

My original pick: Miami 52, BCU 10

Week two matchups:

BCU vs South Carolina State University 

Miami vs Southern Mississippi University

No. 23 Cincinnati @ No. 19 Arkansas 

Football is officially back at Razorback Stadium with The University of Arkansas (ARK) Razorbacks defeating the University of Cincinnati (CIN) Bearcats 31-24. 

ARK quarterback KJ Jefferson had a day as he racked up 223 yards and three touchdowns, two of which were caught by tight end Trey Knox. 

Jefferson was not selected to any preseason all Southeastern Conference team. “Seems to me like when the game gets a little tighter, a little closer, when he’s really got to take over the game, he’s got the knack to do it,” Razorback head coach Sam Pittman said. 

In the loss, Bearcat quarterback Ben Bryant threw for 325 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception.

My original pick: Arkansas 17, Cincinnati 13

Week two matchups:

CIN vs Kennesaw State University 

ARK vs The University of South Carolina 

No. 24 Houston @ University of Texas San Antonio 

This game was a triple overtime thriller. University of Houston (HOU) snook by University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) 37-35. 

The game was close throughout, but UTSA’s kicker Jared Sackett hit a 37 yard field goal to send the game to overtime. 

Both quarterbacks showed in this outing; HOU senior quarterback Clayton Tune threw for 206 yards and three touchdowns, while UTSA senior quarterback Frank Harris threw for 337 yards, three scores, and one interception. 

However, it was showtime for Tune in the end as he rushed for the game winning two-point conversion. 

My original pick: Houston 21, UTSA 20

Week two matchups:

HOU vs Texas Tech

UTSA vs Army

Troy @ No. 21 Mississippi

The University Mississippi (MISS) Rebels defeated the Troy University Trojans in Oxford, MS 28-10. 

Jaxson Dart, transfer from the University of Southern California got his first win as a rebel and impressed his new head coach, Lane Kiffin, throwing for 154 yards, one touchdown, and an interception. 

Rebel running back Zach Evans also showed out, rushing for 130 yards. 

For Troy, quarterback Gunnar Watson threw for 275 yards, one touchdown, and an interception in the tough loss. 

My original pick: Miss. 38, Troy 14

Week two matchups:

Troy vs Alabama A&M University

MISS vs Central Arkansas

No. 25 BYU @ University of South Florida

College football returned to Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla with the University of South Florida (USF) Bulls hosting the Brigham Young University (BYU) Cougars. 

This game was all BYU from start to finish, defeating the Bulls 50-21. 

BYU quarterback Jaren Hall threw for 261 yards, two scores, and an interception in the win, while USF quarterback Gerry Bohanon threw for 172 yards and an interception in the blowout loss. 

My pick: BYU 35, USF 18

Week two matchups:

USF vs Howard University

BYU vs Baylor 

Rice @ No. 14 University of Southern California 

The University of Southern California (USC) Trojans opened their 2022 season win with a blowout win over Rice University 66-14. 

USC quarterback Caleb Williams, who transferred from OU, showed out in front of new head coach Lincoln Riley, throwing for 249 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for 68 yards. 

The Trojan defense also went off, racking up three pick-sixes. 

Rice quarterback Wiley Green threw for 69 yards and an interception in the loss. 

My original pick: USC 45, Rice 6

Week two matchups:

Rice vs Mcneese University 

USC vs Stanford University 

No. 7 Utah @ Florida 

One of the most electric atmospheres in CFB returned as the University of Florida (UF) Gators defeated the University of Utah (UTAH) Utes in an upset, 29-26. 

Gator quarterback Anthony Richardson showed out at home, throwing for 168 yards, rushing for 106 yards, and three touchdowns. 

This game came down to the final play, where Utah quarterback Cameron Rising’s pass to the endzone was intercepted by UF’s Amari Burney.

Burney threw for 216 yards, one touchdown, and an interception in the heartbreaking loss. 

My original pick: Utah 28, Florida 20

Week two matchups: 

Utah vs Southern Utah University 

UF vs The University of Kentucky

Albany @ No. 10 Baylor

The Baylor University (BAY) Bears defeated the University of Albany (ALB) Great Danes at McLane Stadium 69-10. 

This game was already over by half as the Bears outscored the Great Danes 35-7.

BAY quarterback-wide receiver duo Blake Sharpen and Monaray Baldwin had an impressive outing, throwing for 214 yards and two touchdowns and catching for 84 yards and one touchdown respectively. 

My original pick:

Baylor 52, Albany 7

Week two matchups: 

ALB vs The University of New Hampshire


Illinois State @ No. 18 Wisconsin 

Football is back at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison, Wisc. The University of Wisconsin (UW) Badgers defeated the Illinois State University (ILST) Redbirds 38-0.

UW started out the scoring early, with ILST quarterback Zach Annexstad pass to the endzone intercepted by UW’s John Torchino and returned all the way for a touchdown. 

It was a great day for Badger quarterback Graham Mertz, throwing for 219 yards and one touchdown along with running back Braelon Allen rushing for 148 yards and two touchdowns. 

Redbirds’ quarterback Zach Annexstad threw for 186 yards and two interceptions in the shutout loss. 

My original pick: 

Wisconsin 31, Illinois State 14

Week two matchups:

UW vs Washington State University

ILST vs Valparaiso University

Miami (OH) @ No. 20 Kentucky 

Well, I definitely predicted this game incorrectly. The University of Kentucky (UK) Wildcats defended home turf against the Miami University of Ohio (M-OH) Redbirds 37-13. 

Wildcats’ senior quarterback Will Levis played superb at Kroger Field, throwing for 303 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. Senior wide receiver, Tayvion Robinson, caught six receptions for 136 yards as well. 

For M-OH, quarterback threw for 166 yards in the loss. 

My original pick: 

Miami (OH) 21, Kentucky 24

Week two matchups:

UK vs UF

M-OH vs Robert Morris University 

Utah State @ No. 1 Alabama 

Bryant-Denny Stadium was packed for the Alabama University (ALA) Crimson Tide’s 2022 home opener vs the Utah State University (USU) Aggies, beating them 55-0.

The whole Crimson Tide team showed out with impressive performances from junior quarterback Bryce Young (195 passing yards, five passing touchdowns and 100 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown). Junior wide receiver Traeshon Holden caught five balls for 70 yards and two touchdowns. 

The Crimson Tide defense was unstoppable, only holding the Aggie offense to 193 total yards. 

My original pick:

Utah State 21, Alabama 49

Week two matchups:

USU vs Weber State University

ALA vs The University of Texas (College Gameday)

No. 5 Notre Dame @ No. 2 Ohio State 

The Ohio State University (OSU) Buckeyes defeated the Notre Dame University (ND) Fighting Irish at home 21-10. 

OSU quarterback C.J. Stroud had an excellent opening game vs the Fighting Irish throwing for 223 yards and two touchdowns. Buckeye running back Treveyon Henderson rushed for 91 yards and sophomore wide receiver Emeka Egbuka caught nine balls for 90 yards and one touchdown. 

Sophomore ND quarterback Tyler Buchner threw for 177 yards in the loss with running back Chris Tyree rushing for 28 yards. 

My original pick: 

Notre Dame 24, Ohio State 31

Week two matchups:

ND vs Marshall University

OSU vs Arkansas State University 

No. 4 Clemson @ Georgia Tech 

The 2022 Chick-fil-A kickoff game included the Clemson University (CLEM) Tigers taking on the Georgia Tech (GT) Yellowjackets at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, GA. 

CLEM quarterback DJ Uiagaleli threw for 210 yards and a touchdown along with running back Will Shipley rushing for 42 yards and two touchdowns in the 41-10 win. 

For GT, quarterback Jeff Sims threw for 164 yards, one touchdown, and one interception along with rushing for 41 yards. Sophomore running back Nate McCollum rushed for 55 yards. 

My original pick: Clemson 28, Georgia Tech 14 

Week two matchups: 

GT vs Western Carolina University 

CLEM vs Furman University
