Don’t Use New Year’s for Resolutions

By Haley Nowowiejski

From my perspective, it always seems like everyone looks forward to the new year. Having the new year approach comes with people usually having mixed emotions whether it’s because the previous year they had wasn’t the best or they are looking forward to an exciting event in the new year.

The new year embodies this feeling of a fresh start and with that comes people setting new year’s resolutions. Having it be the new year sounds like an appropriate time to set all these goals for yourself for the year to come. I think it is good to set resolutions for the betterment of yourself. However, why does it always seem people are starting these resolutions at the start of the year?

If you want to change something about any aspect of your life I feel like you should always be setting goals for yourself no matter what part of the year it is. It often feels like people always set high expectations for themselves that they cannot achieve. You have to start with things you are capable of doing and work yourself up from there. Therefore, when setting these resolutions, you cannot be too hard on yourself.

Everyone is human, and everyone is going to make mistakes. It is better when you can realize this and get back on track instead of just giving up. Often times, only after a couple days of the new year has passed you see memes online of people saying, “I already messed up, looks like February 1 is the new start to the year instead.” Then people just fall into their old habits and do not implement the resolutions they aspired to have.

“I do not usually have any New Year’s resolutions because if I set a goal I will decide when I want to complete those goals,” said Eduardo Alvarez, senior international business and marketing major.“ I feel that I don’t have to wait until New Year’s to do so.”

I’m not saying that I disagree with people setting new year’s resolutions for themselves. I’m just trying to convey a point that it seems like people use the coming of the new year to push off on resolutions that they want to make for themselves.

Start when you feel comfortable and progressively work up to creating more for yourself with the more you can handle. It could be overwhelming to start making all these changes for yourself at the start of the new year. It may be a good idea to write your resolutions down instead of just thinking about them in your head. Writing them down makes them seem more real and it will make you not forget about what you wanted to set in place.

Learning what you can and cannot handle at certain times is crucial for being able to grow as an individual. With you setting these goals for yourself you can become a stronger person and it could start to improve other aspects of your life.
