Women’s Golf dominates in Puerto Rico

by Isabel Marhoun

The women’s golf team traveled to Rio Grande, Puerto Rico to play in a three-day tournament. The tournament took place from Sunday, Oct. 27 to Tuesday, Oct. 29. During the tournament three of the team’s players were ranked and individually took home first, second, and third place titles. Head coach, Jennifer Jones recaps the weekend.

“It was fantastic that three of our players were in the top one,” said Jones. “We had first, second, and third place individually. It was wonderful team bonding time and a great way to create new connections with each other.”

“When we go to tournaments the schedule is the following… Drive anywhere from three to five hours. Go straight to the golf course for the practice round and eat your sandwich while you’re playing the practice round for five hours. After the practice round, we practice for another hour. Practice if there is still daylight for about 45 minutes. Then go straight to dinner, eat and then straight to bed. The next day, wake up, play another 18 holes, jump in the van and try to rush back to make evening classes while the players eat in the van and do their homework. So, there is not a lot of calm time the entire year when you go to tournaments.”

The schedule for the team is jam-packed while they are at a tournament. This tournament wrapped up the fall season and put the team as No. 5 nationally-ranked team. Kiira Riihijarvi, senior, was able to win her third individual title of her senior season. Making this her ninth career medalist honor.

“A high of the tournament was obviously the team win and my third individual win in this season, we did not have any lows [during the tournament]” said Riihijarvi. “It was just a great place and a fun tournament and it’s always fun to end the fall season with a win so that we are ready for next semester.”

The Spring season will begin in February with the World Golf Invitational. Giving the team a solid four months without the hectic nature that comes along with competing at tournaments. The Puerto Rico tournament was a great way for the team to end the season by getting some team bonding and a win at the same time. Junior, Heather Kipniss explains how great the experience was.

“Puerto Rico was the trip of a lifetime,” said Kipniss. “It was such a blast and being with the best group of gals just made it that much more special. The highlight for me was going Zip-Lining over the national rainforest. It was also pretty cool to go so far and end up winning the whole tournament. I am so proud of our team and our accomplishments. I am so grateful for the places we have the privilege of going to and Puerto Rico was unforgettable.”

The next tournament the World Golf Invitational will be held in St. Augustine, Fl on Feb. 9-11. The team will be going into this tournament strong after coming off of such a victorious fall season.
