Halloween should be a time for candy, friends and fun which is exactly what the Resident Assistants are encouraging this October. They are demonstrating their school spirit by holding a number of different activities and events.

A few RAs from Stadium Center and Austin Hall are hosting a Halloween haunted house. The haunted house will be held on the second floor of Stadium in the Community Lounge. It will take place on Monday, Oct. 29.

“Karina Bunting (RA from Austin) and I came up with the idea. We were trying to think of something fun and out of the ordinary that we could do for the students. It’s not everyday that they get to go to a haunted house while in college,” said Emily Cain, a senior psychology major and Stadium RA.

“There are about nine RAs involved in this event. We have some actors that will be playing the zombies as well,” Cain said. The theme of this attraction is going to be “zombie kitchen.” After they walk through the house, everyone who participated will receive some candy.

On Friday, Oct. 26 there will be a Spartans After Dark Movie Night featuring Shaun of the Dead in the Vaughn Center. This event (9 p.m. to 12 a.m.) includes fortunetelling, a free photo booth and more. Students are highly encouraged to come in costume. In addition, the Vaughn Hall council will be holding a Halloween Door Decorating Contest. All decorations must be completed by Oct. 29, and the judging will take place on Oct. 30. One guys’ room and one girls’ room will be picked as the winners and will be announced on October 31. They will receive a basket full of goodies for their room.

“I thought it would be a great way to encourage some friendly competition among the Vaughn floors and get our hall in the spirit for Kids at UT on October 30,” said Robyn Hurrell, a freshman accounting and management major, who was behind the idea.

“Some people are getting very creative with their doors. I’ve seen doors with themes such as “The Nightmare before Christmas” and “Halloweentown.” A couple doors have definitely caught my attention more than others,” Hurrell said.

Other dorms are participating in their own Halloween door decoration contest, too. Advertisements for similar events hang in McKay and Stadium. It has been discussed by several different hall council members to make these events annual. The students who know about it agree that it is a great way to boost holiday and school spirit.
