Twitter is like a daily yearbook. People post their opinions and thoughts whenever they feel like it. Students who transition to Twitter from Facebook usually have around 100 followers (usually their friends). Many Twitter users follow those friends in return as well as their favorite celebrities.
However, it’s not as common for a celebrity to follow the average person back. So, how does one become “Twitter Famous”?
Sophomores Erica Hobar and Tevin Christopher have found the answer. Not only have they both gained an unbelievable following, but some celebrities and businesses have taken notice of their popularity.
Also, UT social groups have created Twitter accounts such as UTampaGirlProblems and UTampaGuyProblems.
Christopher has 1,203 followers, and the confirmed Justin Bieber account follows him.
Oprah Winfrey has even Tweeted back at him. Four years ago, when Christopher first created his Twitter count, he would have never guessed he would have made such an impact online. It all seems so unreal.
“I thought it was a cool idea just getting into trending topics and commenting. You enter into conversations––people follow you and you follow them,” Christopher said.
Once Justin Bieber started following him, the number of followers increased rapidly.
Christopher explained, “After a few celebrities Tweet back at you their fans follow you.”
What exactly does Christopher Tweet about that catches so many people’s attention?
“If I’m having a long night and if something pops in my mind I say, ok I’ll Tweet that,” Christopher said.
On those contemplative nights, he likes to Tweet whatever comes to his mind. He especially Tweets about pop culture and his personal life.
“I love Twitter. Everyone should get one,” Christopher suggested.
Hobar, another “Twitter Famous” student, has nearly 5,000 followers. She is known for her hilariously quirky Tweets, which are jokes she makes up all on her own.
“I never steal anything. I’ll take an idea and twist it in my head,” Hobar said.
According to Hobar, “I started doing the funny route the summer before freshman year.”
Her dry sense of humor and wit was her claim to fame. Over that summer, her Twitter account blew up, and, before she knew it, she had thousands of followers.
“I think I gained two thousand that summer,” Hobar said.
She posts whenever a clever thought or one-liner pops into her head, and she’ll base a lot of the jokes around her environment.
A British radio DJ started following her. He loved one of her Tweets so much that he shared it on his radio show.
Hobar has also had a Canadian cartoonist use her as inspiration for one of his drawings. She really uses her account to express herself as an individual.
Hobar posts around six times a day during the summer, but she still manages to post around four Tweets a day during school semesters.
She is amazed to have such a massive following and to connect with people all around the world.
Not only have Hobar and Christopher become “Twitter Famous,” but accounts like UTampaProblems have become fairly well-known in the UT student community. UTampaGayProblems Tweet about the issues the average gay UT student might face in a humorous way.
UTampaGirlProblems and UTampaBoyProblems use the same tactic, but they distinctly discuss the funny or not so funny problems college students run into at parties and on campus.
Hobar stated, “Twitter is so weird, but that’s why I like it.”
