Vintage Summer Fashions Embrace Inner Hippie

It’s the 1960s all over again: high waisted and vintage inspired looks are all the rage this summer. | henryjose/Flickr.com

With the semester coming to an end, I can’t help but start planning my outfits for summer. Many of the upcoming season’s trends are very 60s-esque which is ideal for almost any summer look. This iconic generation of peace and love is being reworked, putting hippie fashion back on the map.

Think of style icons like Brigitte Bardot or Twiggy. Almost anything they would wear is fair game to recreate as your own this summer.  From hippie headbands to whimsical white, 60s style is a must have trend to try.

It is safe to say that for most of the last decade, low-rise were the most common fit for bottoms. Recently there has been a shift from hip huggers to a high waist fit.

The higher waist has sure made a comeback and is even affecting the bikini. As much as I will always love a string bikini, these retro style bottoms are tres chic.

These vintage inspired bottoms can be paired with various bathing suit tops and come in different styles. Whether you’re going for plain, polka-dotted or printed it is a suit bound to turn heads at whichever beach you’re at.

Side note: they’re also perfect for disguising a little tummy. To increase your retro beachwear, add a pair of cat-eye sunglasses.

My new go-to summer accessory will be headbands. A headband can change your outfit from boring to bohemian in seconds. To turn your headband into a 60s feel, try wearing your headband on your hairline, just touching the edge of your forehead. If you want to make the look a little funkier you can wear it directly across your forehead in true hippie fashion.

Styles I would recommend are floral, prints, braided or jeweled. But nothing screams sixties more than a flower headband with actual flowers.

This gives the ultimate hippie appearance that you were laying in the grass creating daisy stem tied crowns all day.

These hair accents are the perfect finish to pull together your boho chic outfit.

One of the oldest fashion rules has been you should only wear white after Memorial Day and before Labor Day.

But I’m here to pronounce that rule deceased and no longer to be followed. White is acceptable to wear starting….now. Wearing whimsical white is a trend that deserves more than three months out of the year. White shorts, white rompers, white dresses, white blouses, try them all this summer. Popular styles that look exceptionally good in white are eyelet, crochet and lace.

This serene outfit can turn 60s when paired with neutrals. A brown suede bag or a camel colored floppy hat would look adorable with any white outfit.

Try a little fray. A tear in your shorts, a rip or two in your shirt, it’s all part of the effortless hippie look. These strategically placed damages on your clothing will probably be a trend your parents may not understand but that most people happen to like. Frayed denim shorts have become more popular than ever and can be bought at most stores.

If you have an old pair of jeans you can try this DIY project by cutting them into shorts. Just make sure you leave enough room to pull the edges of your shorts into an upheaval of fray.

Whether you’re at the beach or in the city, 60s style is a style worth trying.

So whip out your best bohemian look and embrace your inner hippie.
