Spartans Rebound From Loss in Win Over Eckerd

After falling from No. 4 to No. 9, following a home loss to Saint Leo last Saturday, The University of Tampa volleyball team defeated No. 22 Eckerd College in three straight sets at the Bob Martinez Sports Center Tuesday night.

UT won by scores of 25-12, 25-19 and 25-21.

The victory improves UT to 15-2 with a 6-1 record in conference play. Eckerd drops to 9-7 and a 3-4 SSC record with the loss.

Junior setter Meghan Sherman had a career game, notching a double-double with 38 assists and a team-high 12 digs.

Sherman also posted a career high in blocks with five of the team’s 11.By comparison, the Tritons only managed one block in the match.

Sophomore Eva Dupay played the libero position and also set a career high in digs with 11.

Junior outside hitter Kaleigh Cunningham led UT with 11 kills, making only one error.

Cunningham turned in a strong .435 hitting percentage, with the team hitting a staggering .473 to just .121 for the Tritons.

The victory marks the fifth time this season UT has defeated a ranked opponent. Their only two losses have also come against ranked opponents.

The win is UT’s first since losing at home to Saint Leo, a loss that ended their undefeated record in conference play and a nine-match winning streak.

The Spartans hit the road again for their next match Oct. 9 against Barry at 7 p.m.
