Learned and Huth win SG elections

Andrew Learned and Kelsie Huth won the Student Government elections for president and vice-president.

After two days of continuous voting with 1157 votes cast, Learned learned of his victory around midnight Thursday morning.

“Kelsie and I are both extremely excited and humbled by the immense responsibility the students have allowed us,” Learned said.

“Our message of change was well received by the students,” he said, “and we will work hard to ensure that their expectations are not disappointed.”

Current SG President Ali Mathe said she was pleased with the conduct of the elections.

“I think a vigorous campaign heightened the turnout this year. I wish Andrew and Kelsie luck next year in making the changes they are committed to making,” Mathe said.

Stephanie Dutka and Daniel Davis, Learned and Huth’s opponents, echo Mathe’s sentiment.

“We would like to congratulate Andrew and Kelsie on their victory. We are excited to see how their proposed changes will be implemented next year, and we wish them the best of luck,” they said.

Learned was grateful to Dutka and Davis for their campaign.

“I want to make sure I thank Stephanie and Dan,” he noted. “Their ideas and experience made this a better campaign, and we are a better campus for their service.”

Learned’s platform relied heavily on promising change to the UT campus next year. Among other things, his campaign speech to SG last Tuesday pledged to change the unpopular alcohol policies, alter the meal exchange program, and revisit the distribution of Campus Safety and Security on our campus.

Though The Minaret endorsed Stephanie Dutka and Daniel Davis for the election, Learned said he harbors no ill feelings.

“We look forward to working with The Minaret next year,” he said.

OTHER WINNERS

Other people that Learned will be working with next year include the rest of today’s elected Student Government executive board.

Tara Lemay defeated Ben Shane and Mario Gonzalez for vice president of finance.

Mark Kieslor defeated Carlos Salinas Zarate for director of public relations.

Elsewhere, Lakshman Lochan defeated Sonja Radmilovic for director of special events.

And all candidates running unopposed were elected to their positions.

This includes Residence Hall Association President Molly Murphy, Student Commuter Organization President Paola Gonzalez and Vice President of Communications David Pazmino. http://www.buzzdash.com/bb.swf?BB_id=73917
