In all honesty, as I entered the movie theatre to see “The Other Boleyn Girl,” I wasn’t exactly thrilled about having to sit through this 1 hour and 54 minute romantic drama. I only went because my roommate and a few other friends suggested we go that Friday night.
I’m certainly glad I went to see it now.
In a nutshell, the movie focuses around two sisters, Mary and Anne Boleyn. In an effort to improve the Boleyn family name, the girls’ father, and uncle use the sisters to win the affection of the king. Initially, Mary wins the king’s affections, and bears the king two children.
However, Anne has an eye for the king as well, and earning the ultimate prize of being queen. The king becomes infatuated with Anne and dismisses his previous relationship with Mary.
This, undoubtedly, puts a strain on the sisters’ relationship. They essentially become enemies. Mary’s actual affection for the king is overshadowed by her sisters’ desire to one day become queen.
Eventually, Anne suggests the king divorce his wife. The king and Anne’s affair takes a toll on his kingdom, and begins tearing his territory apart.
Okay, for those people reading this right now and labeling this movie as a “chick flick,” think twice. This isn’t your typical snuggle up with a pint of Ben and Jerry’s and sigh with delight, romance movie. In fact, this film is far too edgy for that. In many of these scenes you will find yourself disturbed and maybe even a little confused. Did someone say sibling incest? Well, yeah, it’s explored in this movie. I’ll let you find out more about that for yourself when you go see this flick.
Luckily, I watched this movie in a packed theatre, so I could hear and feel every gasp made by the viewers. It was actually pretty refreshing to hear an audience respond to the events on screen. Then again, how could they not?
The cast was outstanding, and included: Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansson, Eric Bana, and Jim Sturgess. I have to praise Natalie Portman and Jim Sturgess for delivering such exceptional performances. I think toward the end of the movie, Natalie had everyone in the audience on the edge of their seats. As for Jim Sturgess, from Across the Universe, he was truly outstanding and proved what an amazing actor he honestly is.
I think I have praised this movie enough by now. When you get a chance, go see it. I hope it leaves you as impressed as I was.
