Spartans Pick Up Third Straight Win with Victory over Puerto Rico

Tampa defeated their international opponent Puerto Rico-Mayaguez 80-54 in Division II women’s basketball Monday night.

High scorer Sheena Walton put up 15 points for the Spartans in their victory over Puerto Rico. Walton shot 6-of-7 from the floor and went 3-for-3 on free throws.

Erica Woodard, Tiara Cook and Kym Taylor each had 12 points for the Spartans. Hailee Sullivan went 6-of-6 from the free throw line and Quynh Nguyen went 2-for-2 from beyond the 3-point arch.

“We’re pretty pleased to be 6-1,” said Coach Tom Jessee. “Obviously we’d love to be 7-0, but after playing those seven games and being 6-1 while playing those caliber teams, we feel pretty fortunate right now.”

Tampa has played basically non-stop since the start of the season. They’ve played seven games in the past 11 days, losing one game by a margin of one.

“We do need a hand,” said Alexa Kane. “The traveling hasn’t been the most fun thing; being able to sleep in our own beds and be able to practice will help us to recover.”

The Spartans next game will be Saturday against Rollins College for their first SSC match of the season.
