Students Speak Frankly At Speech Contest

Students spoke out at UT’s Speech Competition last week, covering a variety of topics ranging from the health benefits of green tea to the plight of blood diamond miners to why everyone should buy an iPhone.

The competition took place last Wednesday, Nov. 7 in Plant Hall.

The top prize, $150 cash, was awarded to Elbin Keeppanasseril for his speech on why everyone needs the iPhone. Kelsie Huth took second place with her speech on how to remember names. Daniella Kwang and Chris Blauth took third and fourth place, respectively.

“Professor Coats and I are excited to see student involvement in such an important skill building contest,” said Professor Chris Gurrie, one of the event’s organizers. “The attitude of the students was extraordinary and exciting. This was our third speech contest and we cannot wait for the next one.”

Gurrie and Coats would also like to give a special thanks to Tampa Police Officer Chris Rosbough for helping to judge at the event.
