The recent earthquake in Peru has affected a group of students here at The University of Tampa.
Last Wednesday, an earthquake measuring 8.0 on the Richter Scale struck off the coast of Peru, affecting thousands of people and killing over 600.
Red Cross officials arrived to assist, and other organizations, including the Vatican, have sent monetary donations.
At The University of Tampa, HOLA, the Hispanic Organization for Latin Americans, has joined the worldwide effort to provide support for the citizens of Peru.
“I wanted to do something,” said David Pazmin?o, President of H.O.L.A.
Pazmin?o is from Ecuador but has friends in Peru that told him about the extensive damage.
Pazmin?o started a Facebook group to help. The group, “UT Helps Peru!!,” has a full list of materials needed as well as bank account information for those wishing to donate.
Some materials needed include blankets, tools, medical equipment and other basic household needs.
Any students interested in helping should visit the Facebook group or contact David Pazmin?o at npazmino@ut.edu.
