Letter to the Editor: Tanorexia

Dear Editor:

This letter is in reference to Lauren Koransky’s “Tanorexics Turning UT Into University of Tanning.”

As a female student, who attends UT with the intentions of acquiring of graduating with a degree, I was repulsed by the quotes made by seniors Lauren Joseph and Kerri Richards regarding what the supposed actions of the entire female student body.

Joseph stated that “…girls are obsessed with tanning at this school because we are all competing with each other to look our best….”

Let’s hope for the sake of UT’s reputation that the females at this school would rather compete over grades, internships and jobs rather than the shallow prize of looking the best.

Last time I checked “tanning” was not a major at this school and considering that an academic major must be declared in order to graduate, it is safe to say that the majority of the female population is interested in more than just lounging at the pool/beach.

Kerri Richards stated that “Girls feel pressured to look tan and thin because everyone is competing for the same couple of guys….”

In one simple quote, Richards has reduced the entire female student body to be conceited and vain girls whose soul purpose is to strike the fancy of a couple of guys.

I never received the memo announcing the lucky guys who are worth looking well for, so I must be behind in the competition.

(Congratulations guys, you must be the real reason why us poor, shallow females attend class in the first place).

The University of Tampa is filled with strong and intelligent women who are making strides in academics, athletics and extracurricular activities every day. To state that every female student is more concerned with her appearance and guys, insults every female student who wishes to better her mind through learning.
