Kennedy Scooter Crash Leaves Freshman in Critical Condition

A freshman was ejected from her scooter Sunday, Oct. 29 when she collided with a car turning in front of her on Kennedy Blvd. near Plant Hall. She was critically injured and was transported to Tampa General Hospital shortly thereafter.

As of press time, Sackett’s condition remained critical. Her internal bleeding had stopped, but extensive surgery was still necessary in addition to the two operations Sackett had undergone.

The accident took place at about 10 a.m. Sunday at the corner of Kennedy Boulevard and Hyde Park Avenue. Sackett was traveling east on Kennedy Boulevard when a Honda Accord turned onto Hyde Park in front of her, according to police reports.

Sackett collided with the car and was ejected from her scooter and onto the roadway. Police say the vehicle was a Blue Honda Accord driven by 72-year-old Barbara Greene.

“Driving in the Tampa area … is really no different than any other area. Drivers need to be defensive and aware of all that is happening around them,” said Dean of Students Bob Ruday. “This is not only for driving, but for walking across Kennedy, North Boulevard and on campus streets. Many students believe that the drivers will watch out for them and that they will be safe. [S]tudents need to be cautious, not be on their cell phones and [be] aware of where they are and what is going on around them.”

“The family has asked that we all keep Natasha in our prayers,” Ruday continued. “She is in very critical condition. I am hoping and praying for the best for Natasha.”

Sackett’s family has asked that there be no calls, visitors, flowers or gifts at this time.
