Yahoo.comI love animals, but I have always hated movies with animals in them. What other purpose do they serve than to make the audience cry? It was with a heavy heart that I decided to see the movie, “Flicka”. This movie, directed by Michael Mayer, stars Alison Lohman (Matchstick Men, White Oleander), Maria Bello (World Trade Center, Coyote Ugly), as well as country music star Tim McGraw. The movie revolves around Katy McLaughlin, played by Lohman, the daughter of Wyoming ranch owners, Rob and Nell McLaughlin, played by McGraw and Bello. During the school year, Katy lives at an elite boarding school where she spends most of her time dreaming of the ranch and its horses rather than getting her work finished. For the summer, Katy spends her days riding her horses and helping her family on the ranch.
One morning, on her way back to the ranch after a trail ride, she is thrown off her spooked horse and stumbles upon a beautiful wild mustang, which saves her from a prowling mountain lion that was ready to pounce on her. When Katy tries to approach this wild horse, it runs away and from then on she is determined to have this beautiful wild mustang.
Running home, she breathlessly tells her father about the wild mustang. He absolutely refuses to allow this wild creature on to his ranch. However, Katy is determined and ends up capturing the mustang. She spends her nights secretly training the mustang which she has named Flicka. While she holds onto the hope that her father will allow her to keep Flicka, she finds that she is mistaken after he loads her up and sells her to a Rodeo. Now Katy must find a way to save her horse and convince her father to let her keep it.
Go see this movie, it is beautiful directed, beautifully acted (Tim McGraw was incredible!) and the scenery is absolutely breath-taking. Sure it’s a chick flick, but it’s a good one! Who doesn’t like a good story about a girl and her horse?
