Evan Wexler And Dan Levy: A “Side Splitting” Success

Student Productions put on a great show Wednesday Sept. 19 when they invited Evan Wexler and Dan Levy to entertain UT. Now, if you haven’t heard of these two guys, have no fear, because before the 19th, neither had I.

Here’s a little background information: Evan Wexler, the opening act, has appeared on VH1’s “I love the 70s” mini-series. Dan Levy, the headliner of the night, has his own show on CBS.com called “The Green Room” and “The Reality Show.” He has appeared on Comedy Central and is appearing in a new movie coming out in 2007.

As soon as you reached the Reeves Theater Wednesday night, you knew it was going to be a good show. Showing up thirty minutes early, the hall way in front of Reeves was already crowded. By the time everyone was let into the theater at ten minutes after 8 p.m., people were lined up from the door down with some people having to stand on the stairs. Unfortunately, not everyone was able to get in to see the show. For those who did, it was a side-splitting evening, full of music, laughs and was a great way to relax and take your mind off of all your school stress.

Evan Wexler, starting off the night by apologizing for the late start (“I had to touch up my make-up”), jumped right into a performance about “emo songs.” Soon enough the crowd was laughing their heads off at this man, strumming madly at his guitar and singing about emo. Next, Evan jumped into another song, this time about that ill-fated “boy on the internet.” This song was dedicated to those Facebook/Myspace obsessed and compulsive Instant messengers that would rather sit in their room reading the latest on Facebook “News-Feed” rather than experience college life. While the crowd with ear- to-ear grins continued to laugh and cheer, Wexler moved to his final song, “I want to be black.” Yes, ladies and gentlemen, he wants to be black. While some were unsure at first, Wexler pulled this song off magnificently and yet again, the audience plunged into a fit of laughter as he tried to rap.

Wrapping up his song, Wexler introduced our headliner for the night, Dan Levy, who strutted out onto the stage and immediately the crowd doubled over with laughter. For over an hour, UT was entertained by this 25-year-old comedian, and they could not have been happier. Levy went through every topic imaginable. He joked about life, sex, cell phone plans, tennis shoes, skydiving, hotels, motels and college life. Even the handicapped weren’t off limits for him, and the crowd was going crazy. Students all over the theater were abuzz with laughter, and he himself even cracked a few smiles now and then. Levy was on his toes when the audience started to act up. When going through a list of shoes and the characteristics of their owners, a girl in the audience asked him about his own shoes. “They’re Air Max and you know what that means? I’m f-ing awesome!” Levy replied to another bout of laughter.

The night was a great success, Evan Wexler and Dan Levy were funnier beyond the expectations of UT students. Thanks to Student Productions, students had yet another reason to postpone doing that paper or studying for that upcoming test, and no one was complaining!
