“The Life List” Review

By Gloria Falach

The newest romantic comedy on Netflix, The Life List, based on Lori Nelson Spielman’s novel, was released on March 28, starring Sofia Carson, Kyle Allen, and Connie Britton.

According to Paste, the film is a classic Netflix tearjerker and will leave most people looking at how they view their lives.

The movie is centered around Alex Rose (Sofia Carson) as she struggles to get over her mother’s (Connie Britton) death. Before her mother’s passing, she found her teenage bucket list with goals that Alex wrote when she was thirteen, and for Alex to get her inheritance, she must complete everything on the list. As Alex continues on the quest that her mother assigned to her from the grave, she uncovers family secrets, finds romance, and most importantly, rediscovers herself.

According to Hollywood Outbreak, this romantic drama with an emotional storyline has shot up to the top 10 spots on film charts in 88 countries.

Netflix assigned this movie to the romantic comedy genre, as the last thing on Alex’s bucket list is finding true love. This is one of the main things she could not cross off from the beginning.

According to Cosmopolitan, the biggest challenge Alex faces is finding authentic love. Alex has three distinct romantic possibilities throughout the movie. Her gamer boyfriend, whom we see at the beginning of the film, does not support her bucket list journey. Her coworker Garrett (Sebastian de Souza) is her perfect match on paper. Brad (Kyle Allen), the family lawyer, is watching over Alex’s journey, completing the list.

Brad is the unexpected romance choice who supports Alex throughout her journey. His personality and character create a deeper emotional connection for Alex to determine what she wants to explore and what is best for her.

Her need to find true love connects back to four questions her mom created. Her mom believes that if the answer to all four questions about him is yes, he is your true love match. These four questions are: Is he kind? Can I tell him everything in my heart? Does he help me become the best version of myself? And can you imagine him as the father of your kids?

Not only does this movie touch on the romance side, similar to many of Netflix’s romantic comedies, but it also touches on family love and finding love and happiness within oneself.

Alex has always been treated like the black sheep of the family, but she could always count on her mother’s loving support no matter what she did.

When Brad gives Alex the list her mother wants to see her complete, it encourages her to leave the bubble her mom has created for her while she was living. On her journey, she discovers family secrets, rekindles old passions, and steps toward who she was meant to be.

On her journey to complete the list, Alex builds a stronger connection with her two brothers while healing her relationship with her father and discovers secrets that will change her life forever.

Not only is this film about finding true love, but it also represents finding love within oneself, trying new things, overcoming trauma, and healing relationships with family.

Some powerful quotes from the movie that make the audience think about life are:

  • “You have to get yourself out of the hole you are in. I’m not going to be around to dig you out, but I can sure as hell give you a shovel to dig yourself out.”
  • “Life is beautiful and messy and complicated, and sometimes it doesn’t look the way you think it’s supposed to look, and that is okay.”
  • “There’s facts, and then there’s what’s true.”

Whether you are looking to watch a romantic comedy, a movie that will tear at your heartstrings, or a movie that will inspire you to start a new life, make sure to watch The Life List streaming on Netflix now.
